Anyone else had enough?

I'm 52 and have been teaching Primary since 1989. I'm lucky in that the school where I work has good behaviour and paperwork/marking etc isn't as excessive as in some schools although it's pretty bad. All I can think about is getting through the next 3 years to reach 55 so I can retire, although realistically, I couldn't really afford to go until I'm 57. I was just wondering if there's anyone out there who has zero interest and enthusiasm like me.

Of course you don't get paid extra to do a duty!

titnomatani · 18/09/2019 13:08

I qualified in 2008 and by 2011, I was done. I went into teaching with such good (perhaps naive) intentions and was shocked how the system was geared at wearing teachers down. More shocking was how bad the hierarchy in the school I taught at was- the SLT were worse than mean girls. I left, retrained and now go into schools in a totally different capacity. If retraining is an option @DaveCoachesgavemetheclap, do it. It's never too late.

Farrowandbrawl · 18/09/2019 13:10

@Danglingmod

NASUWT has published a clear action instruction on lunchtime supervision. ... Members should not undertake any supervision of pupils during the lunch break, unless they have entered into a second contract outside the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document provisions to do so

noblegiraffe · 18/09/2019 13:18

And yet behaviour policies routinely include lunchtime detentions. Sorry, restorative conversations.

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 18/09/2019 13:33

'Staffroom chats'???!!! No-one had enough time to bloody chat in a staffroom anymore - teachers are too busy getting ready for their next lessons or running detentions or playground duty or having meetings etc to hang around at breaktimes long enough for a chat!

And I write as a former school teacher who is incredibly sad that the profession I entered 20+ years ago has now had all the joy sucked out of it and incredibly worried about the state of education now, due to teachers leaving in their droves.

Farrowandbrawl · 18/09/2019 13:48

@noblegiraffe and super

You routinely do lunch supervisor duty and have meetings during your unpaid lunch break and claim no extra 🤔
Why not talk to your union ?

dimsum123 · 18/09/2019 13:55

I'm not a teacher. But reading this thread it is so very sad to hear how much stress you are all experiencing and the poor/almost abusive management is shocking.

Nobody should have to work in those conditions.

No wonder you feel like you can't do the job in the long term which is such a huge loss of skills and experience.

.

Do any of you work in private schools? Is it any different there?

noblegiraffe · 18/09/2019 13:56

Because the unions are useless on this?

Because teachers who kick up a fuss are managed out?

noblegiraffe · 18/09/2019 13:57

Love the idea of Farrow frantically googling union documents to prove teachers who are actually doing the job that they are wrong.

MontBlancHonk · 18/09/2019 14:03

I can't go on. The endless scrutiny and justification has broken me.
I know I'm a good teacher but this isn't living. My own dc get a worn out husk of me.

Farrowandbrawl · 18/09/2019 14:24

Pretty easy google search actually.

Also family member is a school bursar so pretty good idea of what teachers claim for

BelindasGleeTeam · 18/09/2019 14:27

I'm in school by 7:15am. Leave 4:30. Get 30 minutes lunch. Usually do an hour or so most evenings.

I'd say that's a fair days work. I'm part time btw.

Farrowandbrawl · 18/09/2019 14:27

This post sums it all up.
Such OTT wailing

This thread absolutely confirms everything I think .
No not one person seems to have anything positive to say about your profession. Yet... no one is forced to be a teacher. It’s so dreadful. Just leave . Problem solved ?

BelindasGleeTeam · 18/09/2019 14:31

Er upthread I said I love my job.

Read. Stop being goady.

noblegiraffe · 18/09/2019 14:32

Thing is, Farrow the figures speak for themselves. There is a critical shortage of teachers in England, they are leaving in ever increasing numbers and the government has failed to meet its recruitment targets for years.

If it really is all union-protected hour long lunch breaks and leaving at 3:45, those figures are a bit hard to explain, aren’t they?

Maybe the actual teachers have a point?

Farrowandbrawl · 18/09/2019 14:33

And also ...
What I don’t understand...
All these meanie Slt that expect high standards and don’t like people being sick notes ( boo hiss )
Why not just progress yourself to SLT?
Not sure I’ve seen anything on here that suggests anyone likes kids , likes teaching has an fun or enjoyment. You are all working massively long days why not just become a head teacher ?

BelindasGleeTeam · 18/09/2019 14:34

Again, upthread I said I love my job.

You're just bring a GF

noblegiraffe · 18/09/2019 14:37

Are you going to explain the critical shortage of teachers, Farrow?

Farrowandbrawl · 18/09/2019 14:40

@BelindasGleeTeam

Yes you are the single person that loves there job on here. No one else indicated anything to suggest they like it let alone love !

BelindasGleeTeam · 18/09/2019 14:44

Yes, and despite and Oxford degree and a corporate background I'll still tell you it's the hardest job I've ever done.

It's a real slog. Worth it. And I do think there's movement with ResearchEd to reduce the silky crap teachers do. Things are finally starting to look more common sense.

But it's a damned hard job. That's why few stay. If it was such a doss there'd be a queue!

BelindasGleeTeam · 18/09/2019 14:44

Silly crap. Haha, marking and typing.

And it's my day off 🙈

noblegiraffe · 18/09/2019 14:47

Why is there a critical shortage of teachers, Farrow? Try googling it?

Farrowandbrawl · 18/09/2019 14:48

And I feel like the constant negativity from teachers must make for a depressing work environment. This can’t help recruitment or retention. You have 25 year old teachers like @BeingATwatItsABingThing referring to new teachers as ‘fresh meat’ . Frankly I think it must be hideous to work in such a Moany negative environment

Like I say I couldn’t work with colleagues that were all so hard done by

But like I ask. Why those of you that hate it so much don’t you leave?

noblegiraffe · 18/09/2019 14:49

Farrow why do you think teachers are leaving in ever increasing numbers?

BelindasGleeTeam · 18/09/2019 14:49

I've heard kids refer to new teachers as fresh meat.

To be "terrored"

I know of student teachers in schools where they've been told one day one "we're gonna make you cry and want to kill yourself"

Such fun!!
