TAs - are you buying your class teacher a present?

I’ve been moved to a different class next year and have had a lovely year working alongside an nqt. I have done a small gift from the class to remember them by but I was wondering if other TAs would buy the teacher a gift and what you might buy?
Thanks x

Yes I usually get them a bottle

Always exchange gifts with teacher. Changing year groups next year and taking my desktop pencil sharpener with me so I'm buying her one of her ownGrin

No please don't! Teachers get paid loads more than TAs. We buy TAs presents to say thank you. It doesn't need to be reciprocal.

BackforGood · 12/07/2019 00:42

I was coming on to say the same as Millimat
TAs are so underpaid against their value. Please don't feel you need to buy the teacher anything.

WhatALump · 12/07/2019 06:21

Millimat BackforGood ok thanks. It’s good to hear a teachers point of view

I was also going to agree with Millimat I felt awful a few years ago that my TA felt she had to buy me anything, as they're already underpaid, but it was the way things were in the school I'd started at.

It’s a bit insulting to make out TAs are the poor relation in the classroom. If you’ve worked with a colleague and want to get them a small token of thanks then do so. Costa vouchers or fancy classroom stationary are good (the joy of opening a drawer in May and finding that hidden stash of novelty Post Its Grin )

BackforGood · 12/07/2019 11:27

Not really Saucery. It is fact. TAs are incredibly poorly paid for the work they do and responsibility they take. Teachers appreciate them so much, they don't want them feeling they ought to be getting them a gift, when it is the teachers that want the TAs to feel appreciated FAR FAR FAR more than their salary reflects.

Well said BackForGood.

My job share colleague and I have had a difficult class this year. Our year group TAs come into the classroom late and leave on the dot of four o’clock. They will not get involved with any behaviour management. They are both first aiders and very often leave the classroom for half an hour to put a plaster on a child when required. They gossip together and convince each other that their job is very hard. It can often be a relief if they are off for the day.
They have no idea that they are such hard work to work with.
I am usually very generous with gifts for other staff, but am not giving anything to these two this year. I hope that they will reflect on why, and change their behaviour with new staff next year.
Onwards ........ one week to go!

123 I’m sorry to hear that. Hopefully your ta next year will be more helpful
