I tutor for the QTS test. I would also recommend the Numeracyready site and materials suggested further up the thread. What I recommend students do has already been covered but to reiterate-
*Learn times tables and associated division facts
*Learn fractions and decimal/percentage equivalents
*Practice the quickest way to do calculations for you. I would advocate mental ways as to me they are quicker but I have had some students who find a written method take not that much longer and they might be more accurate. It is a mental test, but things don't have to be done mentally.
In the test:
*Use the beginning time and possibly the practice question to write down anything you might need- km to miles conversion facts, the 'worst' times-table for you etc. Far better use of your time than doing the practice question (which is often quite hard anyway).
*Write down the 6 x table and then add 0 to each number, so that you can use these for the time questions- 60 mins in an hour etc.
*Use the whiteboard/paper to act as a ruler to read the graphs. Some of the questions would be fine on paper but are harder off a screen.
*A technique for scatter graphs is to use the side of the paper to measure differences in plotted points to the line of best fit, rather than count individual squares- far quicker and usually more accurate. You can also use this technique when comparing box plots.
And yes, whilst I agree that numeracy is required by teachers, the test is slightly falsified in that you won't be under time pressure when working out the costing of a school trip, or reading data off a graph when your a teacher. A better scrutiny of entrant standards would be to test the numeracy skills but allow the second part of the test to take as long as it needs. In real life, when I cost a trip, I work it out twice, and then get a colleague to double check.
But I do get a laugh at some of the questions. E.g. A parents evening starts at 15:45. A teacher needs to see 26 parents, and each parent has a 6 minute appointment with the teacher. Midway through the parents evening, the teacher takes a 20 minute break. At what time can the teacher expect to leave the parents evening?
A twenty minute break!
6 minute appointment slots! Teacher expecting to be able to leave on time? Hilarious
