Is it worth it?

Hi I don’t know if this the right place to post this, I’ve tried else where but I’ve had no reply.

I’ve recently completed SLTS level two and I’ve got a place on the level 3 course in September, in the evenings. I’ve been on a work placement working as a 1:1 for a child in mainstream school with complex additional needs. Ive worked really hard on the course and the child I’ve been working with is a challenge.

I’ve applied for a few jobs as a TA but I’ve been rejected without an interview for all of them. Tbh I feeling quite despondent about it. The reason I’ve trained is that I have a son with ASD aged 13 and would like to help other children like those who have helped my son.

So is it worth carrying on? I’ve got to borrow the money to fund the level 3 course and I don’t want to do that if there is likely to be a job at the end of this. I’m thinking about giving it up.

Hi. The reason behind it is that ta jobs are now like hens teeth, or hard to come by. Due to budget cuts, schools are getting rid of TAs meaning that the market is saturated. The jobs that are advertised will probably be filled by internal applicants. It really is no time to take up being a ta. Sorry op.

Have you been to look around the school when applying? Are you really selling yourself in your spot and tailoring it to the school? I don’t think you should give up, there are lots of TA jobs in my area, not all filled by internal applicants.

Thanks for your replies.

I haven’t visited the school a in question as I did quite last minute. I’ve heard that it’s difficult to get a ta job etc and that the job market is saturated. I just wondered if this was true before I commit myself to more studying?

you should definitely do school visits

Shayne11 · 16/06/2019 20:47

Phone the contact name on the advert - often the HT - and definitely visit the school. Make yourself known to them early on in the hiring process. Make sure you refer to your real life experience with your child and how you have transferable skills to to education setting. If possible, sign up to agencies and do some temp work to pad out your cv and get to know the different Schools/HTs. Often internal candidates are temps through agency placings.
