Would you go for this job?

Hi all our current senco is leaving at the end of the summer. Our head has advertised the post internally initially on a tempory basis as too late to recruit externally. I had discounted applying even though I would like the role as it involves being SLT and I dont feel I have earned my stripes to do this. I have only been teaching 4 years but in schools 10 years (was a intervention specialist TA before) and have had a lot to do with gaining funding for children, have multi agencies in my room every other week, currently have data and admin for 90 children and have worked with a range of sen.
I think I would do the senco role well however I dont want to be laughed out of the room by applying to be on SLT with only a few years experience.
Today the current senco came to ask if I was applying to which I said no. She urged me to go for it and said there's noone else shed rather hand it over to so I said id think about it.
Should I register an interest or accept that teachers much more senior than me will go for it and that my say wont be taken as valued on SLT? I think id feel a bit of imposter syndrome.

What would you do? Sorry for long post!

Go for it.

Bobbiepin · 22/05/2019 21:49

Yep, do it. Having it as a temp post is great so they can offer it for now then extend if you do a good job.

Kaddm · 22/05/2019 21:53

You should go for it. The current person wants you to have it - what better endorsement could you get?

And people apply all the time for jobs they don't have the paper qualifications for. I had a recruitment consultant laugh at me because I suggested I shouldn't apply for a job that required 2 years of experience that I did not have. He told me to apply and I got the job.

Could go either way! I applied for the senco role in school interviewed today and have just been told someone external was offered the job because they were “amazing”. And this is after they persuaded me to apply!! Now I’ve got to go back into school tomorrow with everyone knowing I didn’t get the job! If u have a thick skin go for it!

Sorry to rain on your parade - and I truly hope that you would be successful.
BUT, ask around, especially if you're in an academy chain or a trust. Find out if there is someone else that is lined up for the job.
I was put up by my former HoD to apply for her job, and I did. It turns out that there was someone they already had in mind from elsewhere in the trust, and I was basically the token 'other interviewee'.
That sounds like bitterness and yes I guess it is (although I did learn later that a colleague was prepared to resign about the situation)), but be very careful.

I lack confidence to just go for it mainly due to the SLT part and the feeling others may not take me seriously, if that part wasnt there id go for it 100%. It has upped my confidence a bit that the current senco trusts me to take over, not sure if shes actually shared that thought with anyone though! I have 5 1:1 children with enhanced funding in my setting this year (currently in nursery) so we've worked together quite a lot. We arent an academy just a 2 form entry and I know there will be 2 or 3 others that are up for it but there was only one person the head really had in mind who has said no. I think I may just be totally honest with my head and say I think id do the role well but want to know if I should apply due to only a few years experience and see what the response is? Id hate to go through the interview process through them feeling obligated and myself not really being what they want.

Sorry to hear that longsigh and mine. I have had that happen before where I didnt get an internal job. Its rubbish but the feeling fades and colleagues are supportive usually!
