Applying for a job 'below' my current grade / covering letter advice

Hi all,

Two things if you would be so kind:

How long do you think is an acceptable length for a covering letter? I'm applying for a job I really want and fear that the 2 sides I have written may be too many. Can anyone reassure me that's fine. I feel like it might be my only chance to tell them what I can do!

Also, and perhaps more importantly, this job would mean losing a TLR (a prospect which, frankly, fills me with joy!). How do I express this in a letter? The last job I applied for (and didn't even get an interview for) I was told I should be applying for management jobs, not classroom teacher, but this is exactly what I want to be! I want to mention it in my letter but don't want to come across as lazy! I'm not, i just really fancy getting away from being constantly culpable etc.

Any advice much appreciated! thank you.

I would probably emphasise your wish to focus completely on being a class teacher, and maybe highlight some key skills you can bring from your TLR experience to the advertised role.

I believe the advice I was given a few years ago was to have one A4 side for the covering letter, but I could be wrong.

Thank you! Not sure I can get it down to one side but I’ll try and cut it down a bit!

Great advice re wording.

I did this recently and was really honest. I said I wanted to focus more on classroom practice and less on spreadsheets.

I shortlist quite frequently and two sides is standard. Don’t worry.
