Pgce

Hi does anyone know if it's possible to do a pgce in a different subject than my degree please? Is there maybe a conversation course I could do or would my only hope be doing a second BA? Thanks Smile

Depends on what your first degree was in and what you intend to teach. Some shortage subjects have conversion courses.

HappyDinosaur · 25/04/2019 14:21

Yes you can apply to do a general primary or early years pgce. Otherwise I think there are options for Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses for secondary, but I'm not sure exactly how that works and what the requirements are.

Thanks for replying. My degree is in drama and I'd like to teach history

I work with someone who has a degree in theatre studies but did a PGCE in RE

SugaredSocks · 25/04/2019 14:38

Thank you @mnahmnah that's good to hear.

Only know about science, but we get trainees with geology, psychology, sports science degrees etc., who do a 1 year conversion course, then do the PGCE.

I get the impression it's much. much harder for them, even with the conversion course, due to a lack of subject knowledge. So on top of the huge workloads teachers have anyway, they also have to teach themselves the subject content, before teaching it to the kids.

Why don't you want to teach drama OP? Do you have history at A Level or any history in your degree?

SugaredSocks · 25/04/2019 18:17

@Piggywaspushed I'd be happy to teach it but have found that since my degree many years ago my passion for history has taken over my passion for drama coupled with the sad fact it's being squeezed out as a subject feel that I may be more likely to get a job teaching history easier than drama.

I asked because there is no shortage in history either. History jobs can be hard to find. As a result, you will be up against recent history graduates. You might actually find it hard to get accepted to a history PGCE without a degree in a closely related subject . Sorry.

SugaredSocks · 25/04/2019 18:31

@Piggywaspushed I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge thank you.

I applied to a Biology (science) PGCE with a degree in related but not 100% straight biology subject. Unis wanted to see that at least 50% of my degree related to the curriculum in my chosen subject and my offers all included doing a SKE (subject knowledge enhancement) course before I started.

I emailed a lot of unis before applying, and there were a few that said my degree wouldn't be suitable (obviously I didn't apply to them).

I'd suggest emailing around some unis to see how they would view your application. I get the sense there's more flexibility in subjects where there is more of a shortage- science/maths etc. However, you may find unis willing to take you.

At the moment- due to the bursaries- it can actually be quite competitive to get a place on a PGCE course, and I believe the bursary for history has just gone up?

Piggywaspushed · 25/04/2019 19:27

History is £12000. The only secondary subjects on less are RS and Music.

SugaredSocks · 25/04/2019 21:13

Thank you I've emailed a few university's and I'll see what they come back with. I won't deny the bursary is an added draw as sadly there isn't one for drama.

There is ! It's £15000 if combined with English.

SugaredSocks · 25/04/2019 21:38

I've not seen that before @Piggywaspushed I've seen it's that for English but never knew it could be combined with Drama thanks.
