As per title
If you are a senco are you obliged to read a child’s ehcp. Or know when review should be ?

The school must provide the provision listed in section F of the EHCP in order to meet the outcomes which are listed in section E

The primary duty is to meet each and every one of the needs listed in section B.

It makes me really sad to hear of people’s bad experiences with their SENCOs. I am so passionate about the job and don’t understand why people who aren’t are given the role ☹️

This would be my worst nightmare as a SENCO. I work 4 days, only have 8 EHCPS in a school of 440.

But have numerous referrals and children in the system that I am supporting/ battling for. Also applying for 4 new EHCPS, I teach year 3, I am LAC lead, Phase Leader, in the DS team and member of SLT. I have around 70 children and families that I am supporting and am always called to daily behaviour issues... some of which generate huge amounts of paperwork that needs to be actioned imnediately. I also manage cover, lunchtimes, playtimes and a team of 20 LSAs and cover classes when teachers are sick.

I have my annual review dates listed now and I do read EHCPS and I ensure I have a good relationship with my EHCP children and parents, but as the demands have grown, I worry I will not be able to sustain this. My parents are also really on it and will chase the LA themselves. I was once 2 weeks late for an AR and I felt terrible.

I also rely a lot on my LA who send AR date reminders, but they often are really, REALLY delayed in sending through the changed/ updated EHCPs and especially the funding.... if the school have apologised and held their hands up and your child is now receiving what they should- surely sometimes we are only human and trying our absolute best.

Your complaint, and the SENCO realising, could be enough to ensure noone else falls through the net.

It would be enough for apology but more importantly a commitment that it couldn’t happen again. Simple amendment to Sen policy that states Senco will read ehcps and arrange review dates.
Not sure why school is so reluctant to make that commitment.
Context . Senco doesn’t have own class. Works 5 days per week.
