When Do I have to tell headteacher

When do I have to tell the headteacher I am applying for other jobs? I'm a ks2 teacher and applying for jobs in the local authority. I want to get out of the classroom. When do I have to tell him? Someone in my school told him and he was vile to her and made her life a misery- luckily she got one of the jobs!

Won’t they ask for references?

I wouldn’t mention it until the job was confirmed subject to references and if you think he won’t give a good reference, ask a team leader.

I’ve known this happen as the HT was a witch and wouldn’t give decent references for a teacher who was trying to move into leadership. Teacher lost the position.

Isn't it by Easter to.leave by end of school year?

Hope it's not my DC's school...teachers leaving left right and centre!

A term in advance is the norm I thought. To hand notice in that is.

You can only leave at Christmas, Easter or Summer, having handed in your resignation at half term.

Of you were applying for other teaching jobs the norm is to ask for refs right away in which case it's worth saying now however as you are applying out if teaching it might not matter. You can state not to ask for references before checking with you/before and offer of employment

Jobs outside teaching? Presumably you'll need to request time off for an interview if you get one so you'll need to have told him before that.

I was once ask to "have a word" with one of my team because she had put the head as a referee without asking (telling, really). So I'd definitely bite the bullet and tell them. I don't do much recruitment these days but I think it's the norm to ask for at least one reference prior to interview as I know we've used references to split candidates and you know how it is in teaching with phoning candidates about the outcome on the same day.

Most companies only ask for references if you have been successful at interview so I wouldn’t tell him until them.

If you're applying for jobs in schools they are likely to ask for references before interview.

As I said if it's not in school the OP will need to request time off for interview so she can't leave it until she has a job offer.

Does anyone know what language I need to look for on the advert to find out if it is school holidays? It is a specialist teacher role for the LA. It just says holidays sick pay n/a
