Anyone read this? I'm considering leaving my inner city comp because everyday is a struggle. Pupils are creating havoc and teaching is a struggle. I'd love to know exactly how he did it.

Seems very, very close to the Michaela model. Have you heard of it?

MsJaneAusten · 20/01/2019 23:39

But we do know how he did it. He followed the Michaela model, or his own version of it, and stuck with it even when parents complained. Any school could do it, but only with a head with nerves of steel!

CisMyArse · 21/01/2019 18:24

Hadn't heard of it before - didn't even know there was a 'model' to be honest. Wish my SLT would do it - would happily stick to a model like this - my school feels like lord of the flies at the moment Sad

Look at the Behaviour Expectations contract on the website of Great Yarmouth Charter Academy. The Head came from Michaela.
Expect to see more of these zero-tolerance schools, Ofsted seem to love them.
That approach doesn't work for every child though and you wouldn't send your child there if you knew they couldn't manage changeovers in silence/reading on the ruler and all the other stuff. Is it selection by another name? I don't know. I'm not sure I'd like to teach somewhere so didactic though. I like a bit of chaos sometimes!

MissMarplesKnitting · 21/01/2019 18:39

My place is too soft and as a result, the kids just blatantly ignore staff. And there's very few real consequences. It too feels lord of the flies.

I am looking for a new job.

CisMyArse · 21/01/2019 18:47

It's exhausting. Everyday, there are fights, vandalised toilets (with excrement), staff told to "fuck off", hideous low level disruption, kids smirking as they openly break rules. No matter how hard we try, how many detentions we set, pupils don't turn up and SLT don't support.

I'd wonder how many parents would take their children out should we try the zero tolerance approach - some parents are part of the problem.

SLT don't support.

That’s your problem there, you don’t need zero tolerance, you need SLT back-up.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 21/01/2019 20:11

I think some schools which have descended into a really bad place need black and white rules. Once there is clarify of expectations and very clear follow through kids can relax and enjoy school more.

Schools can be as strict as they like as long as they are fair. It’s when they are inconsistent and the leadership isn’t there that the real problems arise.

My daughter is head of year in a very deprived London school... she has been told she’s to hard on pupils that continuously swear at teachers, bully other pupils, sabotage lessons so other children don’t have the opportunity to learn.
The teachers report issues to her, she supports them as much as she can but then the head and deputy tells her she’s too hard and undermines everything she tries to do. As a result she’s totally demoralised with it all and is looking to leave the teaching profession as soon as she can.. the Head and deputy are only concerned about Ofsted and the schools statistics and their jobs... but very sadly to the detriment of the staff and failing the pupils that do want to learn.
There is no hope I’m afraid... with week insecure Heads at the realm, these unfortunate schools will continue to fail all those within it.

honorariam · 24/01/2019 21:35

@Wowserme tell your daughter not to leave the profession...just find a new school! I too was a head of year, before my current SLT position and it's a bloody difficult job (hardest in the school, in my opinion) but it can be enjoyable in the right environment!

OP - as a precious poster has suggested, the book written by Michaela staff, 'Battle Hymn of the Tiger Teachers' is well worth a read. If you are on twitter, their head Katherine Birbalsingh is well worth a follow.
