Can your career be affected by your social life?

I used to be a teacher and am now training for a new career. Quite a few years ago I went out with friends and we ended up mucking about on a pole and on the dance floor - nothing provocative, infact we weren't even dressed up! Just wondered if a potential employer (teaching and non teaching jobs) heard about this could I be sacked? Have any of you guys had embarrassing nights out (perhaps work dos?) and still kept your jobs? Thanks.

I would not recommend anyone shares a story which would result in them being sacked.

I’m sure there will be lots of articles appearing in the media around this theme regarding Christmas parties soon. Perhaps you could read or maybe even write one of those.

Thanks, I don't have any stories other than what I mentioned. I have nothing on Facebook but the reason I posted this was because someone made a comment years ago when they heard we went out dancing saying we (it was a teachers night out) shouldn't have done that as we work with children even though we did nothing wrong - just made me worry that others would think the same.

Unless you are a teaching nun, were dancing naked or were accepting tips I doubt very much that it will affect your future career. Unless something more than drunken pole dancing occurred on your night out...

In answer to the question in your title yes your career can be affected by your social life. If you are a member of an extreme group, if you do drugs, if you are alcoholic if you live with someone one a sex offenders’ register etc. All these things can have an impact on your career and whether or not your job sees you as a suitable person to be in their employ.

Thanks for your comments. No nothing else happened other than what was stated in the original post. I didn't think anything of it until this person made a comment when they heard about it. It does make you wonder though as I stumbled accross this article which makes you think are teachers/professionals not allowed a social and personal life!?

I used to imagine that journalists would be quite good at making up a fake persona in order to ask questions on sites like MN but honestly, the reality is incredibly disappointing....
