Part time hours is this right?

Since September I've worked every afternoon in a year 2 class, the main class teacher is the deputy head so I teach in the afternoons. The teaching hours are 1:20 to 3:30 obviously I'm at school much longer than that. I'm in by 12 on Monday for year group meeting and arrive 12:20 most days. I've been staying for every staff meeting at least one a week until 4:45 but recently 2 a week. I've done two full training days 8:30 -4 and have 2 afternoons off in lieu . If there's no staff meeting I do leave early by 4 but take books / work etc home with me . The morning teacher teaches literacy and maths and I cover all other subjects ( I think this is relevant for report writing). I get 1 hour ppa on one afternoon. I was at 2 parents evening s alongside other teacher.

I've just been given my contract today and it says I am 0.35 full time equivalent , contracted hours 9.15 ! I feel really demoralised by this and I feel it takes away all good will . I think I should be at least 0.4. If anyone else works afternoons only can you share your contracted hours ? Should have said morning hours are 8:50 to 12. Both morning and afternoon have a 15 minute break. I am on duty 3 days of the 5 and my pe hall slot on one day means I teach through the break on a 4th day.

Ignore all the 'extra bit' including reports, break duty, marking (those are absolutely expected and don't form part of your hours. Same with arriving an hour before you teach (Monday - did you agree to come in at noon out of the goodness of your heart? I expect you did).

So let's get it down to teaching hours: you teach for 2 hours and 10 minutes per day, yes? Multiply by 5 (m-f) takes you to 10 hours 50. Plus you need 10% ppa, which is 65 mins for your hous. This takes you to 11 hours 55 which you should be paid for.

If total teaching time is 3 hours 10 + 2 hours 10, that's 5 hours 20 per day. Multiply by five for the week is 26 hours. Included in this should be ppa, so you should be paid 11 hours 55 mins/ 26. I don't have a calculator handy... but yes, it looks like more than what you are being paid for, assuming you do 5 afternoons per week.

Really all of this should have been worked out before you even started the job! What did you agree to?!

Contracted full time hours as per burgundy book are 32.5 per week. Assuming the calc of 12 hours a week above is correct (haven't checked it) then 0.35 is correct. Essentially your discussion needs to be about the before 1.20pm time and why they arent paying you for it.

This is down to directed time - you need a break down of how much your are expected to do extra to being in the classroom. If you are on 0.35 your directed hours are 0.35 also. Directed hours include teacing time, PPA, staff meetings, parents evenings, team meetings, after school things like Christmas productions and training days. If you go over your directed hours any extra you do needs to be paid or you get time in leu. I work part time and just had an issue over this kind of thing. You should have been given an overview of how much you need to attend. For example you mighy only be attending 1 in 3 staff meetings or never attend parents evening depending what your head gives you to do.

Just Google search directed hours for a full time teacher are 1,265 a year. They don't includelay marking or preparation time extra to PPA. It normally does include 15 min before and after school day (to see children out and talk to parents) although this might be different for you as you start at lunch time.

Thank you all for reading and replying. I was doing supply at the school last year and got asked very informally if I'd do the afternoons this year and a contract was on its way. I did get asked about pay scale but naively I didn't think about the hours. I have asked about it now and been told it's 10 hours minus 5 lots of 15 for break times! I am on duty 3 out of 5 and teach pe through a 4th. However it's not wholly the money just a slap in the face that written down I give 9 hours a week to the school. I'll certainly be stronger in saying no to extra staff meetings helping at the fete etc. I appreciate all teachers do way more hours than their contact states.

Wait - so burgundy book gives 32.5 hours per week? So that is 6.5 hours per day, 5 days per week. So that might look like 8:30 - 3:00 but would NOT include a half an hour break for lunch or any break at all. Your school does 8:50- 3:00 (and a break in there), so I can't see where they are getting up to the 32.5 hour mark?

Dispute your working hours and negotiate the percentage.

karron · 19/11/2018 16:18

If not payed for break, you are not on duty for break. Keep a log of all after school training and staff meetings to track your hours.

Although teachers do unpaid work like marking and planning extra to PPA they ARE paid too attend staff meetings and after school events (sometimes things are optional to attend and thus means they are no directed hours as you are volunteering). You need to get your head to agree what extras you need to do and ensure it doesn't take you over your directed hours. If you do go over you can claim extra pay for this. For example a full time teacher is paid to attend a staff meeting every week that lasts 1 hour so 38 hours a year. You only need to do 13.3 hours a year. Training days there are 5 a year you only need to do 1.75 training days (might equal 1 full day and 3 twilight sessions).

GodolphianArabian · 20/11/2018 06:37

But you should only attend training days or staff meetings if they fall on times / days you already work. So if there is a training day you would turn up at 1.20pm as usual. Don't feel you have to attend in the morning, you don't. If there are staff meetings then only attend a proportion. You should have had a directed time budget for your part time hours in September.

There is a pro-rota calculator on both the Nut and nasuwt websites.

You need to work out what % you work of a Full time teacher doing that same role.

The afternoon session is generally considered shorter - I think 2/5 and morning is 3/5

I had to negotiate my hours when I did a PT morning only role and was paid 0.57, which in theory would make the pm session for that role 0.43, but you really need to use the calculator to work it out.

I then got my union to check my calculations before I spoke to HT

Thank you Waterlemon
