Where do I stand with Parents' Evenings?

I am a part-time teacher on 0.6. My school published Parents' Evening dates at the start of the year, four in total for my classes, all on days when I work. I was happy to attend all of them.

The school has now doubled the number of Parents' Evenings, so there are two per year group. Again, these are all on the same day of the week, so, in terms of my working days, I would be expected to attend.

Each time there is a Parents' Evening, DH has to take a day off work to have DD, as the distance from home is such that I wouldn't have time to take her home from childcare and then get back to school for the Parents' Evening.

I have therefore said to my line manager that I would like to discuss attending these Parents' Evenings in proportion with my salaried time (0.6).

Where do I stand?

Thanks if anybody has advice.

All meetings that are out of the usual school day should be pro rata. For full time staff, the hours for meetings come out of the 1265 directed hours. If yo work part time, that has to be taken into account. Yo cannot be expected to attend meetings on your day off, neither can you be expected to work additional hours,

You need to ask for the directed time budget - should be a spreadsheet with a list of all the after school meetings for the year and has all break time duties etc on it, lessons etc etc.

You then should work with your line manager to identify 0.6 percent of the meetings etc. If you’re a sixth form teacher for example it might be a good idea for you to attend the sixth form open evening. If you have very few Year 9s you might say you will be at the first half of the year 9 parents evening.

Hope that makes sense.

A pity you've already said you want to discuss pro rata.

I'd have said I already have arrangements for all the new times so can't make them.

But open evenings arent directed time cauliflower

Cauliflowersqueeze · 04/11/2018 09:13

They are in my experience.

C0untDucku1a · 04/11/2018 09:15

Do you mean they are counted in your school in the directed time budget you have? Because fhey shouldnt be. As they are not directed time.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 04/11/2018 09:21

Yes and yes. On contract.
Same for Awards evening etc.

From NASUWT

There is no requirement under STPCD for teachers to attend open evenings, but if you do it should count against your 1,265 hours for directed time. If there is a contractual requirement for teachers to attend open evenings, this will count against the hours for directed time.

Not an answer to the contractual issue but - OP's DH could request parental leave instead of eating into his annual leave allowance.
