A microwave as a school bag?

I'm not normally one for these stories, but there is a part of me that finds this student's idea quite funny.

A student has got into trouble for bringing books to school in a microwave after school banned bags.

metro.co.uk/2018/10/22/school-bans-bags-so-boy-turns-up-carrying-books-in-a-microwave-8062221/?ito=social&fbclid=IwAR0uVYi80BHW3-RopCk7B4xuJ42WZukVV9l4dmXFCm-FtJ7SSopDe2DO1hc

The school have said that there's more to it and there's a number of issues leading to a suspension so I'm guessing it's not as simple as faux innocent 'I just used a different vehicle to carry my books' (as we all know how easy it is for some to claim 'they were put in isolation for JUST ASKING A QUESTION!'), but the idea of a microwave did make me laugh. I have a soft spot for students who find humorous ways around stupid rules! I worked in a school which had a no outdoor coats inside rule - which sounds ok but in practice meant if you were on canteen duty you spent the whole time watching poor year 7s struggle out of massive coats, dragging their backpacks all over the floor and getting flustered, just so they could go and buy a crumpet or something. Such a stupid petty rule. I’d have loved to see a kid find a creative way round it.

I asked my students to back their books with sticky back plastic. I meant clear so I could stick the usual whole school SLT malarkey on the front...
... I didn't specify clear (thinking that was all there was)...

... turns out Tesco sell purple pink glitter sticky back plastic Grin

I like a bit of daft spirit. I can't stand defiance and rudeness.

I have a soft spot for those students too! I'm in the art department so as they go up the school the ones that cause issues in other subjects are usually good as gold for us although cheeky because they enjoy the subject.

We have a no outside coats inside rule. They're not even allowed to walk to their form rooms first thing with coats on - I don't get it! I'm wondering whether a dressing gown would get around the rule if it was in a plain dark colour...

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 22/10/2018 20:29

Oh and in summer they have to keep blazers in at all times when walking around the school unless it's a really hot day and the head declares a 'short sleeve order' Hmm

Anything goes in art! If it's hot take blazers off, if it's cold wear coats (we have no heating - there's a leak in my room so they just shut us off...) If you work better wearing a hoodie then wear a hoodie. I couldn't give a monkeys! But don't blame me if you walk out of the classroom like that and get told off. Each year we get given a pad of uniform slips, I use mine as a telephone note pad Grin

ThrowThose.... You sound like an awesome teacher.

I'm a bit stricter than you on uniform.
I always tell students they have to wear the uniform properly, not out of some personal love of uniform but because those are the rules children and that's life. That said, I also tell them the rule in my room is to layer/unlayer uniform as required.

I like creative ways to challenge rules that are witty and when the student actually has enough about them to know how far to push it between making a point vs being obnoxiously defiant.

I'd put money that in the article it was more than what the child/parent said.

Aww thanks Smile I'm like a naughty student myself some days. Y13 muck up day last year I went around the school with a group of students laughing at the posters mocking some of the stricter members of staff...

OpiningGambit · 23/10/2018 19:23

You can tell the head is a man. Zero consideration for anyone who might need to carry personal products!

Normally I'm on the side of the school in these "outraged at school having rules!!" stories, but this is just daft. If the bags are too heavy, then have a uniform bag which is small.

acleanslate · 23/10/2018 19:43

the head declares a 'short sleeve order'
Im reading and enjoying this thread because I'm a died in the wool rule breaker and not usually a pedant but I for some weird reason I feel the need to point out its not 'short sleeve order' but 'shirt sleeve order'! Grin

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 23/10/2018 21:35

acleanslate I know! My phone autocorrected that for me (I'd already told it not to once!) I thought if I left it nobody would be any the wiser... Grin

You don't work with me do you?!

Racecardriver · 23/10/2018 21:58

I love how far this student has gone. Ok, he could have used something else like a box or something but a microwave? That’s pretty classic.

BishopstonFaffing · 23/10/2018 22:01

I suggest housecoats to get round the no outdoor coats inside rule.

NellieBee · 28/10/2018 19:33

I love the items the student has used!!

We have no bags in our school cos we've had a load of knives coming in...
