Notice period

I have finally made the decision to leave and plan to give my notice by 31st October. My question is can my HT ask me to leave before 31st December or am I entitled to stay until the end of the calendar year?

Your contract will contain the answer to notice periods ... timely notice usually the end of a following term.

It totally depends on your contract. If you are state school, it's normal to give half a teen's notice, so you would be paid (and expected to be available, as necessary) until 31st December.

However, if you work in an independent school, you need to check the wording of your contract. Many schools expect a term's notice, which is effective from the last day of the current term. Therefore, resigning on 31st October would mean you were expected to stay until the end of the Easter term.

term not teen

I am intrigued by the idea of giving half a teen!
I work in a state primary so will expect to work until last day of the Autumn term. Thank you all.

I really cannot wait to leave. I am done with all the busy work, targets, data, data, data and relentlessness of everything. I don't even have any time in my timetable to read to my class anymore. What kind of education doesn't allow children to just read for pleasure? We also were told to only use excerpts from books during guided reading and not use a whole book. Straws and camel's backs.....

Wait, don't expect to 'work until the end of the Autumn term'; expect to work until 31 December. I know this sounds pedantic, but you want them to pay you for those extra 10-14 days!

No, you need to state in your resignation that you wish to resign with effect from 31st August. They may try to push you out at the start of the hols but can’t. You’re covered under the burgundy book guidelines. Unless you you in an academy? Not sure about that ...

SORRY 31st December!
