First day as CA/PSA what to expect?

I start a new job as a classroom assistant tomorrow and I'm very excited but also super nervous!

Just wondering what is likely to happen on my first day (I'm only doing afternoons). Any tips are also much appreciated!

I take it you're in Scotland- TA is the equivalent in England but they tend to have far more responsibilities (way above their pay).

It depends on your school and how many staff they will have available tomorrow. You will probably have a chat with a senior member of staff who'll give you a tour. They might already know your timetable but may also wait to see you and your personality before allocating you.

You may shadow another PSA or be put straight to work.

general dos:

  • listen to instructions and follow them
  • use your initiative (try not to sit and watch the teacher teaching, there will be something you can do to help, even if it's sharpening pencils).
  • you are not going to be the one to 'sort out' a difficult child so follow any strategies you are given.
  • smile!

It is tricky because each teacher will work differently. For example, I'd love a PSA to put out resources while I demonstrate an art technique but another teacher may be training the children to do it.

It's prime bug season in our school, snot everywhere, so a stash of hankies is always a desirable quality in a PSA!

I hope that was helpful- good luck!

Yes, Scotland sorry!

That's fantastic, thank you for the advice. I feel much better now. I've volunteered in schools before so I know the general things but this seems like a big step into the unknown (although I think I have probably just worked myself up over nothing!)
I'm going in a little early to meet with senior staff and hopefully have a tour etc so fingers crossed that helps ease my nerves. I will keep in mind all of your tips, thank you!
