Who teaches PSHE in secondary schools?

Hi I’m sure there’s someone (or quite a few people) who are knowledgeable regarding PSHE.

It’s something I’m really interested in but I’m not sure who actually teaches PSHE in schools. It is done by school nurses, the regular teaching staff or external agencies?

Would really appreciate any information people are willing to provide. Thanks so much.

Biology covers puberty, reproduction and contraception too and conversations after stray into other areas as well. Students tend to be fairly comfortable asking biology teachers questions opposed to form teachers.

Whoever teaches consent needs to be strong about what it is and how it affects both girls and boys. I have seen that skipped by in some schools. Assemblies can also be a powerful tool for teaching concepts like that.

In my current school (independent) we have a dedicated teacher.
In my last school everyone had to do it- every child in the school had it at the same time (one a fortnight) and teachers would be allocated a class. There was training for each year group so all the year 9 teachers had training together. It was a load of shit I hated it and so did the kids

That’s so depressing that the kids hated it too. Do they like it any better with a dedicated teacher?

Mybrexit Unfortunately it's not a popular subject at my current school either. But taught with enthusiasm by the specialist nontheless.

I've found that Y9 and upwards kids mostly think it a waste of time. You can call it PSHE, Enrichment, Citizenship or whatever you like, but they mostly feel that it's an hour they could be doing something that actually got them a qualification or that they felt was worthwhile.

A dedicated PSHE team at ours, alongside experts and visitors in several areas. It used to be anyone who had extra frees, but the quality was so varied as many didn't remotely prioritise. So much better now.

Ours is delivered by form tutors but planned by a HoD in PSHE. I have to confess I love teaching it! I have taught year 11 for 2 of the last 3 years and really enjoy engaging in some of the issues. It helps that my own kids are not far removed from that age-group.

Sometimes the kids get fed up, mostly with any reflective written work. They are happy to watch videos or listen to me or outside speakers. The best one was the retired copper discussing drugs - a lot of them went up at the end to speak to him. I also like a change from teaching one subject.
