Hi all,

Does anyone know when this will be happening? I'm a bit out of the loop!!

It should apply from September (but may be given later and backdated) however it’s only 3.5% if you’re on the main pay scale, 2% on UPS and 1.5% on the leadership scale.

Also, your school might not actually give it to you. Many schools apparently didn’t award the previous cost-of-living pay rise.

Thanks @noblegiraffe Our school did award the the previous one but we now have a new head (who is awful but that's a different story!) so fingers crossed that we are shown mercy and recieve the payrise!

Have a look at your school's pay policy - that should indicate how they intend to administer pay rises.

Its unlikely the pay policy will be ready for September yet. Unions are still negotiating the difference for UPS and L pay. The current plan is a draft (although I can't imagine it will change).

No, it won't have the new figures yet, but it should at least give detail of what type of pay framework the school has adopted (e.g. points-based or a different progression model), which will give some idea of whether all MPS teachers will automatically receive the 3.5% or not.

I thought that all but 1% of the payrise was being funded by the DfE, and schools were expected to have budgeted for the 1% as that was in line with previous years rises. My school has budget issues and I can see them trying to get out of paying the extra if they have to fund it all themselves.

Is it just academies that can choose whether to apply the rise, or can LA schools do this too?

orthepotofbasil · 22/08/2018 22:45

Ok, if my understanding is correct, then LA schools (no clue about academies) have to increase the top and bottom of a pay range in line with STPCD (ie the top and bottom of each school's Main Pay Range would have to increase by 3.5% if that's the figure the government decides on). But schools don't have to increase all teachers in between by that level. They can choose to increase all teachers by a set percentage, or by a fixed cash amount, or to set variable levels to introduce an element of 'performance related pay' (e.g. 'outstanding' teachers get 3.5%, 'good' teachers get 2%). And that should already be in the school's pay policy - even if the figures for the top and bottom or the MPS range won't be until they're finally confirmed. Lots of schools continue to use the 'points' system though, in which case it's likely that everyone on MPS will get the 3.5%.

But I'm not an expert, so I'm quite prepared for someone to come along and tell me I'm wrong!
