Asking for increase to TLR?

Has anyone had any experience in doing this? I'm currently on the lowest amount for my additional responsibility but I do quite a lot (beyond previous holder) and want to take on more this year as well. I'm not entitled to a pay rise this year so this would help. I'm just not sure how to approach the Head and be convincing enough mothballs in school wallet

The way I see it is that the TLR is the responsibility for an area so just doing stuff doesn't mean a bigger TLR.

Equally, it might be that what you are doing the previous post holder was supposed to be doing.

How come you aren't entitled to a pay rise this year? That might affect their decision.

To me, you need to write a list of all the leadership things you are doing currently and how you are accountable for them and the impact of your leadership. Then (with agreement of your line manager) make a proposal of where you see the role going in the future should you get a rise.

You may also want to consider what others are being paid to do. I have one colleague who seems to use my role as 'proof' that they should be paid more because 'I do all this and Maisy only does...' Ultimately I'm paid more because my role is bigger than theirs and them doing lots of extra stuff to help HOD out doesn't equal a TLR.

Hmmm in my experience I'm not aware of anyone getting an increase in TLR payments as they take in more responsibility - which is why I chose to no longer have a TLR!! I guess having a lower TLR and doing more and more in your role is the preparation for applying for your next promotion.?

lorisparkle · 17/07/2018 06:03

From my understanding the level of TLR is attached to the position not the person, so you would have to find evidence that the job is worthy of a higher level. The amount of pay for different amounts of responsibility is also considered comparatively so the pay for your role is also based on the pay for other staff with responsibilities. You would have to make a case for your role with this in mind.

Thanks for the advice - in all honesty, the TLR is much lower then the average for my role and as I’m starting to take over the role of the person above me, I was hoping to ask for the TLR to be put up to the average (if that makes sense). I’m not entitled to a pay rise this year as I was awarded UPS1 this year. I do a lot more then my equivalent in another department (there are only two of us in the school) and it does feel annoying that a) she’s paid the same for very little and that b) if I did this role elsewhere, I’d be 2k + better off. No increase would also mean that I’d have to start going for the role above me in other schools this year (mortgage cost etc) and I like my current school so would rather not.

I'm hoping to do the same. I was awarded the bottom of the TLR scale my role could've been but since then my role has grown and developed. I'm now being paid a lot less than the average for my role and the other people doing the same or less than me.
Let me know how you get on I'm going to be asking my head teacher in September to move mine up.

Appuskidu · 19/07/2018 20:43

Hardly anyone has a TLR in my last two schools!! Even the phase leaders, maths/literacy coordinators and senco.

oneofthose · 19/07/2018 21:03

@Appuskidu are you in a primary school? I'm in secondary, lots of tlrs attached to different roles

MaisyPops · 19/07/2018 21:20

Appuskidu i was going to ask the same question. Are you primary?

My department alone is bigger teacher-wise than an average primary school.

GiantPandaAttacks · 21/07/2018 16:09

One maybe we should write our proposals together.... I could do with some ideas frankly!

OP posts:
oneofthose · 22/07/2018 14:15

@GiantPandaAttacks definitely we should! I started making a list of all the stuff that I think makes me deserving. Student numbers more than doubling in my department, staff also doubling and also needing support (unqualified and non subject specialists), starting two new exam qualifications this last two years etc.

MsJaneAusten · 26/07/2018 08:13

I asked in my previous post. I got (politely) laughed out of the office. There's generally a strict TLR structure that as a PP said is linked to the position not the person. However, I can't see that it would hurt you to ask.

For what it's worth, doing the extra work for no extra pay definitely helped me get the next job - and a hefty £10k+ pay increase - so even if you don't get the increase, keep thinking about the benefits to your career.

CaptainHarville · 27/07/2018 11:59

Do it, put a proposal together and ask. No they might not give you the money you deserve but it raises SLTs awareness of what you do. It shows you're proactive and that you're there to do a job and that the rewards are not just the joy of working with children. If they say no or worse laugh about it then you know to start job hunting for a school that is willing to pay you what you're worth.

oneofthose · 27/07/2018 13:03

@CaptainHarville exactly! My school have a tendency to try their luck and won't pay the going rate unless pushed. Also you don't ask - you don't get!
I can only try and if they laugh me out of the office I'll know my worth to them. I've been doing above and beyond my job in every role I've had since starting teaching 10 years ago. The doing it for career development line wears thin after a while and I'd like to be paid in line with others with the same level of responsibility.

GiantPandaAttacks · 31/07/2018 15:20

Oneofthose exactly my thoughts. I was intending to start to look for the next rung up this year but am a little worried that a recent health issue is going to impact my ability to do that. Urgh!
