What is everyone doing over the summer holidays?

I know some people are already on holiday and for lots of us the holidays are just around the corner and we are mostly quite frazzled!

So, I thought we could have a summer holiday thread to share all the lovely things we are doing Smile

I'll start:

First two weeks myself, DS and DH are in Cornwall on holiday which I am really looking forward to! We will go to beaches/small walks (DS is only 4), visit little towns and villages and go on the steam railway at Bodmin. Generally looking forward to some proper down time!

After that, we will be at home. In the third week, DS is doing some extra swimming lessons each day and around that we will visit the park with a picnic, go along the canal to the nice ice cream place and go to the library.

Planning a trip to MOSI on the train and another day to Eureka! Children's museum.

Hoping to get the kitchen painted and have a bit of a declutter/summer clean.

Will read some books that I have been wanting to read for ages (but want to be able to enjoy).

Will sort DS uniform for starting school.

Enjoy out garden (hopefully, if the weather holds!).

Possibly other stuff of there is time but I am looking forward to not living life at 100mph for a few weeks Smile

Feel free to share your plans!

I am going away for a week with the DCS, but will be spending a lot of time preparing for my new job. Weirdly, I'm excited! Blush Hoping for some days at the beach and meeting friends, plus they will both be at a sports camp for a week. - bliss!

MatchsticksForMyEyesReturns · 07/07/2018 19:25

A long weekend with DP from the first Thursday. DC are at my parents and will be taken out somewhere every day, so will love it.
The week after we go to the South of France for an adventure holiday--canoeing, climbing etc. The downside is we are going by coach...
After that, no plans. Catching up with friends and family and enjoying being free!

A family week in Norfolk.

A solo spa day (I’m putting DD in Nursery one day a week - mostly to get work done, but love a solo spa day!!)

Away for a week in London while DD is in a summer school pre uni.
Then abroad with the DDs - DH hates travelling so isn't coming to either of the weeks.

Then a few days out here and there to suit the DDs.

Time to get into work to set up my new classroom and do some planning/admin.

Time to myself to fit in more exercise and relaxation than I normally have the time for.

A few errands and medical appts for me, dentists for them etc.
Some spring cleaning and decorating. I make a list of some jobs around the house that I haven't been keeping on top of, or things that are looking a bit tired or in need of reorganising and try and tackle at leat one a week.

Can't wait . 9 teaching days left.

SagelyNodding · 07/07/2018 22:22

1 week left for me! I'm leaving my current role to do my training year as a 'real' English teacher in France. So a summer of preparation without knowing which year groups I will be teaching Confused it's the way things are over here! I'm waiting to be posted to a school and hoping for one nearish to my house!

Also planning some very lazy restful days to fully recharge batteries before September... Walking, beach, friends, food and wine Smile

Really looking forward to next year, despite all the challenges it will undoubtedly bring!

BonnieF · 07/07/2018 22:29

I’m pleased to hear that all you overworked, stressed-out teachers will be getting plenty of the R&R you need over the summer.

I simply have no idea how you would cope if you had just 25 days annual leave, like the rest of us, rather than 13 weeks..... Hmm

DumbledoresApprentice · 07/07/2018 22:35

I’m going to be in for a fair bit at the tail end of August enrolling Sixth Formers. I’m going to use the rest of the time to read, watch movies, go to galleries and museums and plan for next year.

SagelyNodding · 07/07/2018 22:35

Glad you're pleased bonnie Hmm

janizary · 07/07/2018 22:40

BonnieF that's the deal when you are a teacher, if you'd like the same holidays you could become a teacher too. What else do you think they should be doing when the kids are off? I'm not a teacher but don't begrudge them their holidays and don't understand why you do?

Flatwhite32 · 07/07/2018 22:41

@BonnieF, you poor thing! Come and join us! The 3.15 finishes are amazing, as as are the free weekends. You'd love it!

MissClarke86 · 07/07/2018 22:43

Oh Bonnie, there there. Jealousy is an ugly trait.

Join us - it’s dead easy, honest.

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/07/2018 22:46

I'm going on a family holiday for a week to the North East coast (of England). Then another week dd2 and I are going camping.

The rest of the time will be spent doing stuff at home, entertaining dd2 and some of her friends, trying to declutter the house (I've hired a skip for a week!), Getting dd1 ready for going to uni, etc

Oh and I'm learning the content for the new A Level that I will be teaching in September. That will take up my evenings pretty much the whole six weeks (I'd rather sacrifice my evenings than my days with dd2)

LartenCrepsley · 08/07/2018 07:25

A family week at Butlins (I’d rather be jetting off to somewhere glorious for an all inclusive, but Butlins is perfect for our DC aged 3 and 5), a few nights camping at the seaside, read my stack of waiting books, day trips with my DDs, prepare DD2 for starting school September.
And the usual planning and classroom set up for next year!

PumpkinPie2016 · 08/07/2018 07:46

Ooh lots of nice plans for everyone Smile

I am getting all excited now for the holidays Smile

9 days left to work - I'm shattered but will enjoy the break when it comes.

Bonnie we have a huge teacher shortage across the UK - schools are really struggling to recruit and retain teachers. So, please apply for a PGCE and come and join us! That way, you can help with the shortage and get the holidays - win, win!

Retired now but once my kids were grown up I started booking National Trust working holidays as soon as the summer term was over.
It was bliss to spend a week or so miles from anywhere and put on a minibus every morning to be transported to some even more remote spot, given a mattock and told to sort out a footpath. Basic but decent accommodation and 10-12 nice people to share work, chores and leisure time with. No other teachers, though, ever - that surprised me.

WowLookAtYou · 08/07/2018 09:07

Is it worth pointing out to Bonnie that the vast majority of these holidays are unpaid?

Anyway, we will have a week in the New Forest, staying with my dad and taking the dog with us for walks and pub lunches. BIL has a boat in Poole harbour, so we'll go out with them and meet up with cousins etc in the area for bbqs and so forth.
Then later on we're off to the Caribbean for an AI week. Kids aren't coming (uni students so other plans with mates), so we've upgraded!
The rest of the time, we'll spring clean the house, clear out the loft Shock and get the kids old playroom redecorated. Both kids are moving uni accommodation too so will pitch in and help sort all that.

So, a mix of relaxing and chores.

ninnypoo · 08/07/2018 14:04

I don't have kids which means I get 6 weeks just for me! Can't wait.

Week 1- staying in London and sorting out classroom (moving sites) with lots of sleep
Week 2- back to hometown for a wedding and then staying with my parents for a week of more sleep and relaxation
Week 3- back in London for a few days to see friends and planning on doing a few days of exploring by myself then on to Lincoln for another wedding
Week 4 and 5- 2 weeks in Turkey all inclusive!
Week 6- seeing friends and being in denial about returning to work

Mondkind · 08/07/2018 18:44

So much to do! Two major birthdays coing up. One big trip to go on abroad. Sorting out old paperwork to prepare for leaving school. Sorting new school paperwork. Tidy and clean everything that has been neglected throughout the year. Spend quality time with the kids. Get creative again. Sort out bits around the house.

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 08/07/2018 20:47

bonnie they’ll even pay for you to donthe training year!

rainbowfudgee · 13/07/2018 17:19

Lots of days out at zoo and theme parks as we have annual passes to several. DH has booked a few days off so will come with us some days. We also have 10 days at European center parcs. Meeting friends, taking advantage of local fun days etc, getting out on bikes, swimming at the leisure centre, seeing family. I'm not going in to school at all!

CraftyGin · 13/07/2018 18:07

I’ve been off for two weeks now and am thoroughly confused about what day of the week it is.
