Teaching at Hogwarts

I've been listening to the Harry Potter series, nearly finished book 3, and it has set me thinking about the teaching there.

None of the staff seem to have a teaching qualification or any training, just rock up at the school and go.

Hagrid's first lesson Malfoy gets attacked, as a science teacher you wouldn't try a risky practical without knowing the class first.

Supervision in the house areas, is there any at all? Ever?

Have you read anything about teachers/teaching/schools that has made you smile?

I do enjoy mentally Ofsted-inspecting Hey Duggee on a morning too.

None of those badges are ever underwritten by any form of respectable youth organisation!

Bekabeech · 18/06/2018 12:37

I stand corrected - and I loved Oliver Wood's accent too.

I would love to see their sanction policy - if they have 1 (the amount of house points lost and won seems very arbitrary and the severity of detentions varies enormously.)

@shouldwestayorshouldwego Can I ask what book of filming locations it is your children have please?

AppleKatie · 18/06/2018 15:54

Whatever sanction policy is in place there’s always that one teacher that goes rogue! Grin

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 18/06/2018 20:07

I went to glenfinnan viaduct not long ago, saw the steam train! It was fab!

On another note, I always wonder why the teachers never have a familt or kids etc

A few things:

-Always think Slughorn and his little slug club wouldn't be allowed now!

  • What happens to the teachers in summer. Snape went home to a house he presumably owned during the summer (half blood Prince) but Trelawny had no where to go in Order of the Phoenix when Umbridge tried to get rid of her.
  • Why doesn't Filch, Madam Pomfrey and Madam Prince eat at the staff table?
ICantCopeAnymore · 18/06/2018 20:25

There isn't anything to suggest the teachers don't have families. McGonagall was married, Phineas Black had four children. Teachers would usually live in Hogsmeade so they remained close to Hogwarts. Some didn't have families, but some did.

Neville and Hannah were married with children too and he was a professor.

It would say something like
'if you are the head teachers favourite you can do anything you like include break all other rules and still get given all the points at the end of the year'

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/06/2018 22:32

That fanfic fails to remember that Hagrid would have stood out somewhat to the Ofsted inspectors, being half-giant...

LadyLance · 18/06/2018 23:35

Everything about Hogwarts as a school is appalling if you think about it for long enough- but TBF Dumbledore didn't care about teaching, just recruiting for his "side".

Snape, for example, should never have been let anywhere near a child. Can you really imagine a teacher being a 13 year old's worst fear? Especially when his parents have been tortured into insanity.

That OFSTED report was pretty funny though!

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 19/06/2018 00:36

@Hotchocolate86 it is Harry Potter on Location - delux edition. It is very much an information book, quite nerdy and not just in relation to HP but also the locations too. There is a history of each location before moving on to the details of the filming. I would say it is aimed at an adult audience. However my yr 3 & yr 6 enjoy it and it passes as a non-fiction book to tick that box at school whilst still being about Harry Potter.

DH hates it already and any mention of a 'detour' to see X. Think that could be partly due to having to drive round central Liverpool looking for St George’s Hall and the Cunard Building before battling back to the tunnel. It certainly sifts out the 'less committed' Harry Potter fans! We got it in the Glenfinnan NT shop before watching the steam train.

Hotchocolate86 · 19/06/2018 07:16

Thanks @shouldwestayorshouldwego I’ll see if I can find it on amazon

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 19/06/2018 18:09

Which book ican’t does it say McGonagall was married?

ICantCopeAnymore · 19/06/2018 18:12

It doesn't - it was in her biography that Jo put onto Pottermore.

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 19/06/2018 19:21

Oh right. I didn’t think I’d read it. I’ve not read around the rest of HP stuff, I might start though as I’m currently re reading the books for the 3rd time.... 1st time as a teen (I was 13 when the 1st book came out, so optimum demographic), 2nd I had to re read the previous just before the next came out! And 3rd to my son at bedtime, which i’m thoroughly enjoying!

ConstanceVigilance · 20/06/2018 08:17

For those who were looking for some definitive proof that Hogwarts is in Scotland, I am sure in the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them book there is sentence that says 'Rumours of an Acromantula colony being established in Scotland are unconfirmed' which has then been crossed out and says 'confirmed by Harry Potter and Ron Weasley'.

psychomath · 10/07/2018 13:27

I was wondering that too Polkadots! In fact, why have the line start in London at all, on the complete opposite side of the country - why not build a big floo network exit in Inverness or somewhere, and then everyone can start from there and spend one hour or so on the magic train rather than six? Especially as it doesn't even seem to stop to pick people up along the way, which would be the only rational reason for making the route so long.
