Getting back in the classroom

Hi all,
I've name changed for this for obvious reasons. I'm secondary qualified but have never worked full time in the classroom. My qualification came before you had to do an NQT year. However, I have spent many years working for music services including whole class primary instrumental projects. My problem is, I am watching my profession die at the moment. I really want to stay in teaching, but would like to find a nice primary school who would take me on. I realise that most would say my experience is out of date or not relevant, but I would really like to teach primary. Most of my career has been spent getting year 3&4 students started on an instrument but the whole job is becoming less & less acceptable now.
How could I find a teaching job in a primary that would even look at my application? I have many years experience with that age group, but schools will not recognise that experience on paper & just see me as expensive for what they get. I need some ideas please x

What about music teacher in a prep school rather than a primary school?

LadyPeacock · 15/06/2018 18:19

Prep school music is a good idea.

Otherwise it depends on your area. If you are somewhere with a shortage (London fringe for example) you would probably be able to walk into a job, especially those being advertised at this point in time. Or maybe sign up with an agency and do some long term supply before applying.

If you live somewhere where it's still difficult to get Primary jobs (some parts of the West country etc) you may need to do some volunteering or applying for TA roles first.

Local prep school a no go I think. Current music teacher will retire in the next 5 years & I can't wait that long! Really need to have a permanent job to go to before resigning from my current one so supply not really an option either 😞

I have previously applied for HLTA posts but I either don't even get a reply, or "we can't take you on on a TA wage as you are a qualified teacher" (even if I was happy with it legally they couldn't)

I know someone who has a few part time roles doing music teaching in primary. Could you split your week with various schools?

My dds' primary doesn't push music at all, which I think is due to being v small and rural. I think if they had the option of having a qualified teacher in 1 day a week it would go down well.

Careergonewrong we have a qualified teacher who is a standard TA in our school???😕

She is paid as a TA. My children also have one in their primary school.

ScoobyGangMember · 15/06/2018 19:59

Yes they can take you on as a HLTA or TA. That's bollocks.

ScoobyGangMember · 15/06/2018 20:00

Many ex teachers are working as TAs. To work as a HLTA you'd need the HLTA qualification.

careergonewrong · 15/06/2018 20:06

How do I get one of them?

Qualified teacher working as a TA hereSmile Have also done HLTA work but found it too stressful given the low pay.
If you can cope with the pay cut then a TA job is the perfect way to do what you love without all the stress and paperwork.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 15/06/2018 20:08

You don't need an HLTA qualification if you have QTS.

LadyPeacock · 15/06/2018 20:11

To work as a HLTA you'd need the HLTA qualification.

As far as I know the specific HLTA training doesn't exist anymore, although there are Level 4 courses. The people called 'HLTAs' in schools are actually just TAs on a higher pay grade than the other TAs.

Loads and loads of TAs are qualified teachers. There are 4 in my school.
