Was my HT lying all along?

Found out today that i don't have a job for Sep! My 0.6 temp contract runs out in July and the head has been telling me since Feb that she wants me to stay etc...
So, today she told me that 'they' cannot find a way for me to stay i.e. they don't want to get another part timer in, and are going to be advertising for a FT teacher! I am welcome to apply ( she knows i can't do FT!) blah de blah....

I am taking it very personally this evening. She obviously doesn't want me to stay that much. Was she lying to me all along or am i being unreasonable? Is having part timers really that bad? I am so upset and really pissed off with her too..

I am afraid you were being strung along.
She is part of 'They' btw.

Good luck anyway.. Something better will come your way

I'm sorry that you have had such bad news. From a head's perspective, having part timers can be hard work and can also cost more than having a FT in place. I wouldn't have strung you along like that though- the least she could have done is give you a heads-up that it was unlikely they could keep you on so that you had more time to find another role, the last half term is a bit late!

Neolara · 08/06/2018 19:32

It's possible that until the May half term, she didn't genuinely didn't know what vacancies she would need to fill for September.

Rubbish situation for you though.

The ending of a fixed term contract still counts as a dismissal. They can't just end it and employ a full time person.

Of its local authority or follows directed time then you should be paid until 31st August as you've already worked those hours.

Salve What do you mean? If my contract has expired, surely they can do what they want?

Nope, in employment law the natural end of a fixed term contract is still a dismissal and the employer has to be careful. For example they couldn't say they didn't need the post anymore (redundancy) and then employ someone else. If you've been there 2 years you have employment rights.

BoxsetsAndPopcorn · 08/06/2018 22:24

Maybe she does actually want you but the role they have is full time. It's not their fault that you won't work full time. Part time job shares can be a nightmare for schools, it costs more than one person and the children have less stability etc.

Part-time is really difficult to manage, but so is recruiting teachers!

Salve is right, there's not really any such thing as a temporary contract. If you've been there 2 years you have the same rights as a permanent member of staff.

The only difference is that they can let someone go at the end of the contract without having to go through a restructure where everyone reapplies for their job, but you're still entitled to redundancy pay according to your service. If you have continuous service at another school that usually counts too. (depends on Academy T&C if not LA schools.)
