TOIL

Anyone heard of the concept of TOIL for full time teachers? A few of us have been asked to cover some lessons for a sick colleague(which, of course , we shouldn't be doing...it's all about not spending any money) and have been offered TOIL in return BUT only when we have free periods anyway.

I didn't work in one of those fascist dictatorships schools that has stated hours of presence in the school building so I can't see the appeal. To me, I am being told I have to go home at lunch one day and lose my free periods! I can't see what I would gain from this. I'd just go home and watch Countdown or something (and by the time I got home , I would have used 30 minutes of it!). Then I'd have to catch up on my marking, planning at another point.

I've only ever heard of TOIL before for admin staff who accrue it and so can therefore take whole days off.

Yea you're right no unions (it's a private school) but to be honest I did think all teachers had to do cover.

Independent school and cover is a very different issue to state school cover I think.

In an independent school you are generally expected to do it but in return you do also usually get considerably more PPA than you would in the state sector.

Oh, a private school... totally different then. My DH still does cover and invigilation. I do warn people who say working in a private school is so much better of this!

However, he has 'exams weeks' at his school where there is no teaching at all and can get all his marking done in school time. And has marginally more PPA than a normal state school teacher

Thanks, everyone! I had no idea there was so much difference between state and private sectors. We do invigilation too.

So, in a new development, I have just been asked to do somebody a 'big favour' next week, in return for - you've guessed it! - Time Off In Lieu (approximately 3 hours' worth...)

I'll have no frees left at this rate!!

Point out you can’t take your frees at home if you haven’t got any!

This is one of the benefits of being a part-timer - if I agree to do extra cover as a favour I get paid for it at supply rates.

Piggywaspushed · 12/06/2018 17:13

Interesting. In my school our part time staff would get TOIL!

All my PPA is in trapped time and I’m not going to be able to go home for an hour between lessons so that suggestion would get the response that they need to find someone else to do the cover! Pretty much like your issue then.

Piggywaspushed · 12/06/2018 17:31

Yes, I was just thinking that! Any of my PPAs that aren't trapped (all three of them in 10 days...)have effectively now been earmarked as shorter days for me to bugger off home, as if I am part time!

How is it TOIL if it's in your PPA time?

In my school we don't do any cover. We can earn TOIL by working out of hours (e.g Saturday or half-term revision sessions). And we can then take a day off later in the year.

well might you ask hope. !!

Apparently the satisfaction comes from being able to leave the prison site.
