Holiday revision sessions - new HoD and I seem to have annoyed everyone

Just wondering how it works at other schools and why people seem pissed off. At our school (been there years, only been Hod since Sept) we used to be paid for them and now are not. As a result, nothing is said by SLT, but obviously a lot of people still offer them.

This year people start asking me whether I would want them in for sessions. This made me feel a little Hmm because obviously it's not for me to say I expect people to give up a day (or more) of their holiday. I absolutely do not expect it but it felt like people were leaving it to me to direct them, or not. Also a couple of teachers said they were away for the week, so that made it worse as I would have had to say if you're not away you need to come in, which I obviously had no intention of doing.

I said that I'd offer a session but that I certainly didn't expect others in - our school doesn't get a great turn-out for these things anyway, so one of us was probably always going to be enough anyway. But still, for reasons I don't get, people kept mentioning it and asking what I wanted, verifying I didn't want them in etc.

Then a part-time member of the team announced that she would come in with me. I said great but there's really no need, but she was insistent. This then prompted others to ask me even more, and I repeated what I had said. It seems people felt guilty (totally unnecessarily) for this woman coming in when they weren't, but not guilty enough to just come in, which they shouldn't have to, but continued to put it onto me to tell them whether to come or not. I repeated there was no need.

The day was yesterday, and in the morning I received a couple of texts from people saying they weren't coming - I hadn't though they were, but fine. The part-time woman came, but spent most of the time we were together complaining about everyone who hadn't come, complaining about her childcare she'd had to pay for to come, and explaining how all her family had asked why she was doing it and how she'd told them it was for me and not the school Shock. It was like a back-handed compliment, but I don't understand where it came from. I swear I didn't ask her to do this and kept telling her not to. I'm mortified if she has incurred costs because I've given her the impression she had to come in, but I'm sure I didn't.

I know this is the most boring pile of shit anyone's ever written, but if anyone has any advice as to how I could avoid this bad feeling next year, I would be so, so grateful.

Fearful?
Fearful when they have been repeatedly told they do not have to go in on multiple occasions?

This is getting towards let's blame anyone in leadership for our own inability to make decisions about our holidays.

Fearful about jobs is like a place where I used to work where people were strongly advised to do lots of extras and if you didn't it would be noted in your performance management.
Fearful is a friend's school where they have to document everything being offered to studnets who've repeatedly done no work and disrupted learning but those students better get a 6 or else you've failed.

Going into work after being told not to is not people who are fearful and the bitching and complaining after is passive aggressive and unpleasant.

You haven’t worked under conditions where you have to second guess everything middle management say. Fear is most definitely the response. Your interpretation is no less valid than mine - I’m sure you have experience too, just different from mine.

Yes I have so don't assume. I've already mentioned where you are strongly advised to do things but no official direction to do things (because you can't be officially directed). Equally union representation disappeared there, huge staff turn over, lots of bright young things selling their souls to be promoted into leadership only to burn out within 4 years.
I've seen it. And left that environment.

Equally, I can think of a current colleague who is lovely but our team line is that nobody has to run revision after school and nobody has to do holidays. Colleague was one of the most vocal who rightly called out the insane coursework resit culture etc because it was ridiculous being back every night with different students doing revision and coursework.
We have an agreed policy as a department. We follow it. Nobody offers extensive intervention or revision after school. Guess which colleague is still back every night with different groups of students?
Guess which colleague is still complaining that they never get a night off?
Guess which colleague is still complaining that 'there's something wrong' and how exhausted they are and how they aren't on top on marking because they had to do all this intervention which probably won't have any impact?
Yes. The same colleague who was the main extra revision offer-er before the review and the only colleague in the team (leadership included) who is back routinely with students after school.

But that's not what's going on here.

Sometimes a spot of common sense is needed.

There are some massive issues in teaching and workload is one of them.

Are some leaders awful? Yes.
Does the OP sound like a horrible leader? No.

Are some staff martyrs who love complaining? Yes.
Do OP's colleagues sound like they like to have a whine? Yes.

Something similar happened at my school. No pay for revision sessions and we were told by union reps to not offer sessions. My HoD did a session but made it crystal clear nobody else was to come in.
