Fixed term sure thing or possible permanent?

I am a supply teacher, currently working as a class teacher in a long-term supply placement.
I've been offered a fixed term contract for a year at another school.

Meanwhile, my current role is being advertised. I've also applied for a third role which should be shortlisted for this week.

All 3 roles are one-year contracts, however, the role at my current school has the scope to become permanent eventually. I am by no means certain to get the job if I applied, although the school have been happy with my performance in the role.

I'm am an NQT. Would you, in my position, go for the fixed term role which does not have scope to become long term? Or would you wait it out for the could-be longer-term role?

You can accept one post (the fixed term) and then apply for others (permanent). You need to resign from your fixed term post by 31st May (I'm assuming it's normal notice period) in order to start somewhere else in September.

Schools should not have a problem with this if you are straight with them and tell them you cannot afford to miss the opportunity of a permanent contract.

I should have been clearer, all of the roles are to start in September. They are all fixed term for one year but only one has scope to become longer term beyond that.

I'm leaning towards the bird in the hand.

You never know what's going to happen in a year though. Any of those roles could become permanent if they like you and a vacancy comes up.

If they are all one year fixed-term, go for the one that suits you best. I wouldn't rely on the possibility of a a permanent post at one of them - things don't always work out.

Definitely accept the one you have been offered. You still have the right to resign before you start and go for something else. However, it wouldn't look so good if you were just applying for another fixed term, so your gut instinct is probably right. Accept the post, do your NQT year and look for permanent posts over the next couple of terms.

I would accept the job you have been offered - you really never know what might happen in terms of staffing in a school so it could become permanent after the year.

I took a fixed term job as my first job and ended up there for 5 years!

Glad you are sorted Grin at least now you know you have a job for next year and can either look for permanent after that or may and up staying at the same school.

Congratulations on the job!
