Cover as a TA

I work as a TA and am called upon for cover and PPA. How much cover and PPA is a reasonable amount to ask for a TA3? Last week I taught more maths lessons that the class teacher I work with. Which is fine as that's part of my job but I'm feeling out on more and more. So what's "a normal" amount in your working week?

Might be worth a chat with your union rep, they should have a good idea of the lay of the land.

You need to look at your job description. It varies.

Talking to your union is a good idea.

I will cover sickness and occasionally agree to cover courses. I always ask for time back or extra money though as I've seen others taken advantage of as cheap cover. I would never do more than you're happy to and if you feel like they are taking advantage, they probably are.
Luckily, I work with a fantastic head and it's very much a fair working relationship. I'll help them out and I feel it is appreciated. Since September, I've probably covered classes for a couple of sessions each month.

Coconut are you a TA3? Do you cover ppa?

I second union. It's a bit unfair and demoralising when you get paid so much less the the class teacher Angry

I dropped down from teacher to TA, Level 2 after my 1st DS. I haven't covered ppa this year but I have agreed to do it for 2 afternoons from September. My head said I would be paid 'a higher rate' but I need to speak to the bursar about what this will be.
I wouldn't do ppa if it was the school's bad planning meaning they had no one else.

None of the TAs in my school do cover - even though two are on a grade that means they technically can. I'd be checking my contract/contacting union/ asking for more money. It's taking the piss. I've also known TAs who are 'promised' a higher rate never receive this higher rate, so get it in writing.

Our HLTAs all do the PPA cover and take classes when teachers are out for whatever reason in our school. Shocked at how little 'more' they actually get to do this. Not worth the stress and disrespect, imo.

I've been trying to find any legal restrictions on this but can't find any. Our school are no.1 at taking the piss. No 'money' for supply, no extra pay for teaching all day, asked to work or do training outside contracted hours for free, and snapped at if you dare mention 'how about some time off in lieu'.

As a TA1 I used to be paid a £10 ‘act up’ fee when I covered a lesson. Could only claim for one act up a day though.

As a TA3 I would expect to be covering PPAs regularly as part of my role and unexpected sessions as and when.
