How would you approach this job vacancy?

Hi everyone.

I have stumbled across a vacancy at my dc's school for a part-time deputy-head (2 days per week). I would absolutely love this job but am under-experienced (having spent the past 7 years either on maternity leave or teaching PPA cover 1 day per week). I have never been on SLT.

I do however feel that I would be capable of doing the job. I am on UPS (have been for about 5 years), and even in my 1day-per-week job I have led a subject area, run CPD, have experience of TAs' professional development etc. The job advert says that the role would be overseeing assessment across the school which I have a strong interest in (it formed the basis of my masters thesis).

I know the head fairly well, taught a few days supply, volunteered in the school etc. It's a small school (1 form entry). Should I mention to him that I was interested to see the job advert? Should I just apply? It would seem a wasted opportunity if I were to be the only applicant. And yet it would be embarrassing if I were to apply knowing that I am not at all qualified for the job.

I don't know what to do!

For jobs on SLT it is usual to arrange an informal tour of the school and discussion about it prior to interview. I would approach directly and ask for an applicants tour.

Thanks. After having given it some thought, I think I will call the school tomorrow to arrange a visit.

What do you imagine an 'informal visit' would consist of?
