0.6 responsibilities

Hi,

Been teaching for 5 years in a primary school in Leeds...just had twins and returned part-time.

Currently teaching 0.6 (3 full days). On the other 2 days the class is covered by a combination of SLT and a TA.

Last term I completed 100% of these tasks: assessment marking; data inputting, online assessment, report writing, parents evening, trips. I also completed the majority of maths marking and 60% of literacy marking.

I guess my question is: does this seem fair to you? Is it just something I have to accept when 'job-sharing' with a mix of people, none of whom take any responsibility for the 0.4 part of the week? What would your next steps be?

The work for the class should,be split, but this,is,the problem when the time you aren't in class is 'covered ' rather than taken by someone else who is responsible for the class.

A job share works best when it is two people who are class teachers, not one class teacher and 'cover ' . My last part time role was, like this, I ended up going full time as I was doing all the work for half the pay. That isn't the solution though. Can you talk to the people who cover, especially SLT , to share the responsibility more?

I'm secondary and do 0.6, reporting and data is split between us if I have split classes with another teacher. So I might do their books, the other teacher the assessments. That teacher does the data entry....and then next term we just swap.

But I still do stupidly long meetings on Mondays (which I can't see as right when it's 1:3 days not 1:5 like for full time) and a duty day like everyone else. And all parents evenings, whether it's a working day or not.

All of which sucks. But i wouldn't do full time any more!!

That's not ok. It should be 0.6 of all responsibilities.

When I was 0.5 and my job share was on mat leave my school got a supply in for the rest of the time. I insisted, and was given, time out of class to do the extra share of reports / data / assessments etc or paid time to do them at home - no way was I doing it for free on a part time salary.

Put your foot down now or they'll forever take the piss!

Union - there needs to be somebody responsible for the 0.4 when you're not in. They're taking the piss.

I do 3 full days and job share with another teacher. We split jobs between us and did parents evenings and reports together. You're definitely doing too much. Not fair at all.

Yeah I got stuffed like this on my last job share including planning for the two days I didn't work... left after two years.
Same thing happened in my previous role. In addition to a teaching role I was also the music co-ordinator and was expected to cram all the clubs into three days. Three lunchtime clubs, one after school club and a singing assembly each week. When the Junior school I worked in amalgamated with the infants I was expected to then also take on the role into KS1. When I asked the head which nano second of my three 12 hour days with no breaks I was supposed to fit this in, she had no answers. Refused to consider getting in an additional specialist teacher like every other school in the area and no other staff would volunteer to help out.
I left in the end and guess what? She got in a specialist teacher to cover the role- having told me there was no additional money in the budget.

Part timers always seem to take on full time additional responsibility roles. Dare to complain and you get accused of not being a team player...
