Quit FT secondary to do supply?

I'm seriously contemplating this. I have had enough of the marking, data obsession and teaching load due to underfunding. The only thing keeping me in school is liking my colleagues and most of the kids.

Has anyone done it? Left a permanent post to do day by day supply? I literally want to walk in, cover classes, walk out. No maternity covers etc - I am done with marking. Am I deluded?

I suspect it depends where you are and what your need for money is!

I've done plenty of supply in the past, but realised towards the end of it that I was the only person working through the LEA and paid to scale - everyone else was with an agency and that seems to be the way it goes now. Agency taking a cut, not paying to scale/paying cover supervisor wages, etc.

I wouldn't do it, despite the workload. It would mean a huge pay cut for me.

Still mainly paid to scale in my area.

Anyone made the leap?

I went from permanent primary class teacher to daily supply. Big pay cut, but so much better for my mental health. Could you deal with around £110 a day before tax, no holiday or sick pay?

I was PT secondary (went PT after having dc no2) and then - due to relocation - did supply. It's very intense (sometimes getting called as late as 840am) during the day and I found you have to be on it 125% during lessons, but I have to say that walking out of the door with no bloody marking is simply brilliant. It can be lonely - although having time at lunch to feel lonely as opposed to having no time to eat is again a novelty. I feel able to expect to get work 30 weeks on average (obviously I'm scaling up days etc there) year and get about £120 per day. I'm in a city with about 8 secondaries and as many in the surrounding area. I'm actually about to do a maternity cover for the summer term and I'm wondering whether I'll be quite pleased come September when I say goodbye to marking and planning again. I do always feel it's not a long-term option for some reason: I know many people do it as a career however.

Quite useful thread about people's experiences.

Great link 3mployer thanks! It's actually selling it to me.
