Change in times of day

Can anyone tell me if a school can just change the time of the school day?
At the beginning of the year there was an extra ten mins and now we're losing ten minutes of lunchtime.
Thanks.

Is it an academy?

They can change the structure of the day within the current start and end times without consultation. Does it mean a change in your directed time?

Can't point to legislation, but going back a few years when my school did, there had to be a long period of notice, and consultation.

Not an academy, local authority school.

Previously we could leave at 3:45 (obv no-one did!) but that got changed to 3:55.
Now they've changed lunchtime from 12-1, to 12:10-1pm. So teaching an extra ten mins per day.

Are you within 1265 hours still?

Cynderella · 04/03/2018 22:46

The extra ten mins at the end of the day must have been added to the directed time budget before Sept. I'm assuming that the extra ten mins at lunchtime keeps you within the 1265 hours - if it doesn't, you need to challenge it. Unions will support you as a staff.

If you're still under 1265 hours, well, it's bad practice to impose rather than work with staff, but sadly I fear there's nothing you can do about it.

No idea about 1265 hours. I'll have to add them up and see!

You should have a Directed Time budget, but obviously a lot of schools don't publish it. You should be able to ask the Head for a copy - s/he should have one.

But if you want to calculate, head over to TES forums, Pay and Conditions, and you'll be directed to a calculator.

It's considered good practice to consult about changes to timings of school day and lunchtimes, but generally SLT get what they want out of a 'consultation' anyway!

I keep reading about these schools that tell you what time you can leave! I am so Shock
