I'm so impatient waiting to hear if I've got an interview. At home today trying to keep busy! Hope the wait isn't too long.

Can’t square this thread with the teacher shortage we keep hearing about.

theblueflowers · 28/02/2018 14:29

I think the shortage is very location dependent. I'm also applying to schools that I know are good- staff rarely leave!

awkwardsitch · 28/02/2018 16:56

No news here either so think I'm out. Deadline was two days ago and interviews are Monday.

Piggywaspushed · 28/02/2018 17:08

The teacher shortage also exists in specific subjects and at certain levels. You might get no one applying for a headship, for example by 50 -100 applying for an assistant headship at a great school. I find it enormously frustrating that I can't break on to a senior team :(

LadyLance · 28/02/2018 17:24

From what I've seen (applying for a PGCE in a shortage subject and looking at my career prospects), shortages are pretty location dependent- there seems to be a lot more vacancies in big cities where your wage obviously won't go as far!

Some subjects (such as PE) and some levels don't have a shortage at all.

Also, I think some schools are keen to recruit cheaper NQTs or RQTs compared to more expensive experienced staff.

I also haven't really seen any part time roles advertised except for subjects only taught at the school at A-level (e.g. 0.5 for psychology with the option to teach another subject further down the school). Although I haven't been looking for them specifically either.

That's just my perspective not being in the industry properly yet, though.

Good luck to all applying for jobs!

theblueflowers · 28/02/2018 19:12

@awkwardsitch I wouldn't count yourself out yet. Definitely still time.

My interview went terribly! I sound pretty negative but I know when I've done well and I was not feeling that at all. It was less than 25 minutes long and I couldn't even answer half the questions. Waiting on that letter...

Tillyscoutsmum · 28/02/2018 19:37

I'm on a 1 year contract (maternity cover for someone who has recently confirmed she isn't coming back). I noticed "my" position advertised and no one at SLT has mentioned it to me Sad I'm assuming that means they don't really want to receive an application from me and I need to look elsewhere for September. Meh Sad

Good luck to everyone else

awkwardsitch · 01/03/2018 15:24

Tilly I'm also on a maternity contract hence looking for other jobs for September. I would absolutely love to stay where I am though but they haven't advertised anything yet.

Tillyscoutsmum · 01/03/2018 17:36

@awkwardsitch I'd love to stay where I am too. I'd also thought I was doing well there but the fact it's been advertised without mentioning it to me has made me feel that there's little point applying Confused

awkwardsitch · 03/03/2018 07:37

I think I'm deemed too expensive because I've taught in private. I earn about £9k over the M6 state level (im not slt) so state schools won't look at me and other private schools don't necessarily pay as much. Basically I just have to hope and pray that my maternity contract will be extended.

superram · 03/03/2018 07:44

Awkward-or you take a pay cut. Many School look at m3/4 as the average new salary. Could you afford to come down? Our school is terrible at communication so I would apply if I were you-they might just have forgotten.

awkwardsitch · 03/03/2018 07:47

No im part time anyway 0.6 and want to stay that way so can't afford a pay cut.

Tillyscoutsmum · 03/03/2018 08:59

How's everyone else getting on?

I've taken the plunge and applied for the permanent post where I am now. It closes Monday Confused so I'll soon see. I need to know either way but it'll feel quite tricky seeing the year out if I'm there knowing they don't want me permanently 😔 Need to develop a thicker skin I think

Piggywaspushed · 03/03/2018 09:54

Bloomin' eck that's a generous school witch. My DH works in a private school and earns a tiny fraction more than a top of UPS equivalent at a state school would. I think most private schools sell themselves these days on smaller class sizes and more time for responsibility posts, rather than more pay.

Piggywaspushed · 03/03/2018 09:55

Haha not witch : misread your user name!!

Yorkiedodah · 04/03/2018 08:31

I'm currently on a maternity cover contract in a great school which I absolutely love. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful at the interview held and won't be there in September. It was very upsetting but I've applied to two very different roles; one state and one private.

I feel I'm at a crossroads with teaching. Unfortunately, I have no idea what I could do outside the sector for the same amount of money and can't take chances since I'm a single earner. Good luck all. Should be hearing either way in the up and coming weeks.

LimeFizz · 04/03/2018 09:07

My DH runs an education recruitment business. He's always after good teachers up and down the country.

Mainly state schools at the moments I think but also recruits for the big independents. If you want he can try and help, he's not at all pushy and I think he's very nice!

I've been on here over 10 years and don't usually mention him but if he can help I'm sure he will, pm me and I'll pass the details over Brew

SheStoodInTheStorm · 04/03/2018 09:22

@LimeFizz so he recruits for schools?

LimeFizz · 04/03/2018 10:16

SheStood yes, he recruits for schools, all sorts of positions from
NQT through to Heads. He's done it for years now. I just thought was worth mentioning as I saw some on here are finding it tricky to get a job.

I work in a school so come on this board quite a bit, I NC a lot now though, after Jeffrey.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 04/03/2018 10:36

I know need to know about Jeffrey!

SheStoodInTheStorm · 04/03/2018 10:39

Oh the hacker?

Would be happy for you to PM some info on what your husband does/what it entails (I am a teacher looking for a new job)

LimeFizz · 05/03/2018 10:26

I'm not sure how to pm from the app, I'll see if I can work it out later and will send you his details,

Hope he can help you
