Perfect role, but not amazing school.

I am workin g at a school on a short term contract and I am not loving it. However, I think that this is mostly due to a nightmare HoD, but also down to the fact that I have just left an amazing school where I loved the culture, the teaching, the children, even the parents! This new school is a little strange and lacking in warmth but I think that apart from the current HoD that I am working with it is quite an easy place to be (it's an indy and people are usually left alone to teach). I do think I will get gradually used to the change in culture and approach. I was a generalist for a long time and this is my first specialist role, which is something that I have wanted for a long time, but alas, is in the wrong department. I have the chance of moving into another (permanent) specialist role in this school in a subject that I really love and is my main degree subject. I would also be the HoD (so I would have some of the autonomy that I am used to). So my question is would you take a dream job that is a relatively good fit in a school that is not bowling you over?

Personally, I would take the other job - you will be HoD so current nightmare HoD shouldn't be a problem to you anymore. As for the school generally - I think it always takes time to feel 'at home ' in a new school. I started my current school after 5 years elsewhere and in the first term was quite unsure - two years in, I absolutely love it!

Take the job - you will gain valuable HoD experience and if, in a year or so you want to look elsewhere you can.

Definitely take the job - I think your feelings for the school will change once you are not a subordinate to the nightmare HoD

Take the job. If you are still not happy in the school after a year or two you will be able to move on with experience in the job you want to do.

Take it

Thanks for the advice all. I will take it. I think I'm just stuck in a wishful thought that my dream job will show up in the previous that I loved. But if I turn down solids offers for a hope and a prayer I may look llike a fool come the end of the year when I have no job to go to.
