Hello!

Thanks for reading ;)

I'm interested to hear from people who are currently completing a primary pgce, or have done recently. Would you recommend it??

Also, what funding was available for that year? Concerned that with 2 kids I might not be able to afford it!

I'm in an admissions type role not the classroom. please be careful asking about funding from other years when making your decision. The change in funding is down £3k from last year to this for primary general.

Bursary information : unfortunately only now available for primary with a maths specialism. List is here: getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/funding-and-salary/overview

You may also be eligible for student loans for tuition fees and maintenance from Student finance England. Residency and household income ect are taken into account. Maximum figures are here:
www.gov.uk/student-finance/new-fulltime-students

This is for 2018 entry. 2019 information has not yet been published. Based on previous years, I'd expect it to be out sometime between late July and early September.

Don’t do it!!

Sorry, but I wish someone had said that to me when I was considering doing my PGCE. I’m sure you’ve read lots of the threads on here from teachers asking what other jobs they can do and you’re going into it with your eyes wide open though.

Can’t help you with info on training funding, but I do know there’s a real issue with actual pay once qualified. No one in my school on MPS went up a pay point this year. Not because they didn’t meet their PMR targets but because there is no money-in fact, we are going through a redundancy consultation at the moment. Pay portability hasn’t helped either when you move schools, so eg you might be paid on M5 in one school but when you move, the new school could put you down to M1! You would obviously probably not want to go and work there though!!

Sorry for the negativity.

Thanks for the info!

Not looking too positive then. Such a shame as we're in desperate need of decent teachers

There's an active thread on the same subject over on AIBU.

I did my pgce in 2006 and am just about to finish paying my loans back this year. Don't do it!!!!!

Norma27 · 07/01/2018 16:31

I’m a mum of 2. Was doing my pace when pregnant with second then went back a few months after she was born to complete final block.
Worst decision I ever made doing a once. I ended up waking up and not going back in one day. Awful job. didn’t see my children at all. To be honest cannot think of any positives!

Norma27 · 07/01/2018 16:32

*pgce not once!

Such a shame as we're in desperate need of decent teachers

It is a hard job and there are many people leaving. That doesn’t mean they aren’t decent or that given improved circumstances, they wouldn’t return to the classroom. I hate the notion that it is our fault if we can’t hack it and that there are plenty of others out there who can! Anecdotal evidence suggests the opposite and I suspect official stats are showing massive holes.

I am secondary trained and now work supply in both primary and secondary. Primary is lovely in good schools. Challenging in not so good schools but nothing on earth would make me take on the responsibility of a class again!

Good luck with it!

I’m our school’s trainee mentor and student coordinator, so I can probably advise if you have any specific questions about the course.
Regarding funding I don’t think there’s anything available for the primary PGCE, though there are quite hefty bursaries offered for shortage subjects at secondary level.

Tarrarra · 10/01/2018 00:05

There's no funding for primary really. I'm doing my pgce self funded this year. Student loans are really the only option. You could look for a salaried school direct, but these are rare...

CappuccinoCake · 10/01/2018 00:08

I can't imagine surviving the pgce year with 2 kids...
