So I decided last night I want out. I’ve worked every day since half term and only took two days off during half term (including weekends). You know, the usual story... I can’t handle the kids calling me s**t (or their parents) when I’m literally sloggin my guts out for the little ingrates...

I have half a degree in science education and unrelated mfl degree. I’ve always worked in education...

They say a change is as good as a rest. Any suggestions welcome.

I changed school last January. I wanted stay a teacher until we had our first, but 2 years ttc is fast approaching with no dice!

What language?

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 16/11/2017 17:31

How much money do you need to earn?

physicskate · 16/11/2017 18:55

Around 25k ish. (Give or take). Obvs more is fine!! I wouldn’t turn my nose up to lower though if it felt like a good fit!!

Degree is Russian, but I barely can speak it anymore! Translation is out!!! I probably speak better French but no qualifications in it...

My science is (obviously) physics, but as I said, not a full degree in it.

Today massively confirmed the decision... but I’m willing to play the long game!!

How much money do you need? Would tutoring cover it?

physicskate · 19/11/2017 09:04

I’ve done tutoring in the past as an add on. I think the irregular nature of it would be hard. I’ve never activel pursued it, but as I live in a rural area, students are few and far between! I’d need at least 10 if not more like 15 students a week year round. It’s unlikely...

But thank you for the suggestion!

Any chance of teaching French at primary school level? Some schools employ teachers simply for this, which means you have far fewer parent issue (in general they don't know you at all). You simply teach, and leave.

I'm sure there's more to it than this - but the people I know who do this seem pretty happy with their work-life balance.

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 19/11/2017 12:56

Maybe you could supplement tutoring with online tutoring? Tute is a company we use. I tutor children who are out of school but we sometimes choose to use online tutoring for certain children.

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 19/11/2017 12:58

Good luck with your TTC journey. I'm sure the stress of teaching isn't conducive to conception; I certainly struggled.

Fffion · 19/11/2017 16:28

Look for a job in the independent sector.

physicskate · 19/11/2017 17:43

I’ve always been at indies...

And I’m sure the stress isn’t helping ttc one bit. I already have depression from teaching and finding infertility very difficult on top...

If only I were younger and had done a more sensible degree!!

Fffion · 19/11/2017 17:48

They swear at you?

physicskate · 19/11/2017 18:01

They have. Not regularly... I got called a ‘prick’ on Friday, of that counts. I really just think I’m not 100% because of infertility and you can’t teach while you aren’t 100% on it all the time...

I also can’t imagine teaching and parenting a child (hopefully children, even though it all looks very unlikely at the minute).

I’m also sick of parents telling me that I’m crap... at my job. My heart just isn’t in it any more? Burn out??

Do you get any support in the school to build your confidence against "crapness".

physicskate · 19/11/2017 18:08

My hod is very supportive and more than happy to take the misbehaviours into the back of his lab.

My confidence is shot. I try to put a good front up, but there are holes in it, hence me asking internet strangers what I should do next instead of teaching.

I used to be a pretty great teacher. Now... well enough of the kids and parents think I’m terrible...

Sounds like you want out of education completely.

I would find a recruiter and tell them you’re looking for a entry level job with a national company with a good record of job progression within X radius. Visit job fairs too. I think the key is being face-to-face and proactive.

ProphetOfDoom · 19/11/2017 18:13

And you’re in the wrong school.

physicskate · 19/11/2017 22:30

Thanks prophet. That seems like sound advice and a way forward.

I left my old school cause my hod was horrendous - down the drive before the kids had left his lab. You can imagine what everything else was like!!! But the kids were truly fantastic.

I only started at my school about a year ago. My hod is amazing, but the kids... ugh. Very hit and miss...

Yes, I’m quite sure I’m done with teaching for the mean time...

You're me op

physicskate · 22/11/2017 07:02

Vague outlines of a plan: leave for summer - so notice in by Easter, if I don’t get pregnant by then.

Looking at some jobs in the civil service and local councils. Will approach a recruiter after I resign and do supply for the off day in autumn if no dice with a new job.

Phew! It’s nice having a plan!

You should be able to get a job teaching physics pretty easily, they're crying out for them. Out school struggle to fill the physics roles.

physicskate · 22/11/2017 18:33

I want out of teaching. It's so thankless. And yes, I'm aware they're crying out for my lot. I think the problem is that physics is 'hard' (I don't think it is, but I suppose I must have at some point??) and I try to get them to think, so instead of doing that, they'd rather much about.

I'm being criticised by parents because their children misbehave. I can't parent their children in a few hours a week. Maybe they're embarrassed?
