School offices and data protection

I’m aware of the GDPR changes coming into force in May next year but I’m concerned about our compliance with the current rules tbh!

What I really want is a check list that is tailored to schools so I can do a decent self audit. Have anyone seen such a thing?

Something that gives me the do’s and dont’s , what I’m allowed to display on walls, what should be locked away and a timeline for destroying documents.

If anyone knows of such a thing, please share! Thanks.

It’s basically what is already the law under the Data Protection Act. Contact the ICO. If you are already getting it right you have no need to panic.
Children have specific rights under GDPR to request that online stuff about them is removed and more chance of success than adults asking for stuff they did as adults to be removed.

I’ve been on the ICO website and there is a self audit but it’s all a bit woolly and refers to adhering to the main principles of DP.

What I’m after is something more specific, giving me answers to questions like:

Can I keep a folder with the phone numbers of emergency contacts for children next to the phone in the office or should it be locked away?

Can I display photos of children and details of their medical condition or allergy in staff areas or not?

Exactly who should have access to CP documents?

What about EHCP’s? Teachers obviously need to have them. How should they be stored?

That kind of thing, school specific stuff.

It’s all about who needs access to the info. Data Protection is the law now and your school should already have this stuff in place. The woolly stuff about fairness is because.. it’s for the controller of the info and their circa to determine what is fair.
As I say, you should already have this stuff worked out and regularly tweaked at the school. It’s been the law in full since 2001.
How about asking your Local Education Authority.

Whereabouts are you? You might have a local law firm willing to do a bit of pro bono on the specific points/questions?
