Stocking a teaching and learning library

Hi All

For some not immediately obvious reason I have been out in charge of research in my school.

One thing I want to do is restock the pedagogy section of the library which consists of about 20 books from circa 1998.

So, I am after recommendations from the good teachers of MN. My school is a secondary school.

If you can recommend, then I can have a look.

So far, I have

Cleverlands by a woman whose name I have forgotten

Getting The Buggers To Behave

You Know The Fair Rule

The new David Didau book

Various of the Pocketbooks

and one called Talk For Teaching.

Books are very pricy so my little research group would benefit from a well stocked up to date library!!

Also interested to know how there's a huge budget for a section of pedagogy for staff in the school library (brilliant but mind blowing, we can't even afford glue!).

I am buying boos to show that I have done something : long story. Plus, I am an English teacher so I like books! The library was embarrassing (just that section!). In a lunch meeting, some of the participants mentioned books and then said how expensive the were so I thought I could fund some. I agree about blogs and the internet and think they should bloomin well be seeking out their own reading to be honest but hey ho. We haven't got much of an enquiry culture other than in very small pockets of the staff (maybe four of us...)

noble - I mentioned in my meeting that the power of Mumsnet had led me to some interesting research by Mark Roberts on gender. I said a person called the noble giraffe knows everything. They all looked a bit bewildered!

Re the budget : when I say huge I mean maybe £150 - £200! It's Teaching School money.

ps unseen am a member of chartered college. I don't ever access the library but I do like the magazine.

Doesn't anyone else think blogs are sometimes people like Didau sitting down and spouting unsubstantiated crap?

I like Schools Week.

On e person in my meeting yesterday basically said they followed education stuff on Twitter and read about education. the rest didn't. I am trying to build a better culture around research as I think our SLT also don't do this so a lot of our ideas are still years behind and not rooted in enquiry or actual up to date research ( one of my SLT colleagues wasn't aware resilience was 'a thing' and VAK stuff is still being taught by him to ITT as if it's the new discovery!! I hate to break it al to him... and he is in charge of teacher training!!!)

Staff don't always have time to read but in many ways it is more rewarding and genuinely helpful than the hours they spend faffing around with guillotines and purple pens.

I have made a list and will confront my head with it next week. He hates books!

Ye gods VAK? I thought that was well and truly gone- it's even busted as a myth in the science museum in Newcastle!

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2017 07:26

Haha! I know!

It's considered proper cutting edge at my place...

In fact, it is still on the university's lesson plans!!!

the noble giraffe knows everything

Can I put that on my performance management? Grin I love the idea of a group of people who still think VAK is a thing(!) being told about a blog recommended by a person on Mumsnet.

I don't even know if our school library even has books on teaching, I'm never in there. Maybe this library should be in the staffroom so that teachers actually see it?

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2017 08:09

The librarian will only order for me if the books go in the library. I can also track if they have been borrowed! No one goes in our staffroom...

The plan is to circulate a potted synopsis of each book via email and to take a photo of the lovely books on the shelves!

I imagine most of our staff don't know this section of the library exists.

It also doesn't help that we are a split site school and 2/3 of the staff never even venture to the building with the library in it!

I also liked Lemov et al's Reading Reconsidered (I'm an Economics teacher - I could see some applications of what he said about cultural capital and decoding texts). I read The Matthew Effect as a result. Daisy Christoudoulou's 7 Myths book is good. If you've got colleagues thinking of Master's study, maybe a few books about how to do research?

I quite like The Lazy Teacher's Handbook for ideas and I used to like Ian Gilbert's Essential Motivation for the Classroom, but it dates from the VAK days.

No ones mentioned ‘make is stick’? I found it quite useful. Is it passé??
