Pay scale question

Yourownpersonaljesus · 30/09/2017 21:40

Has anyone ever heard of M6 on the teachers pay scale being divided into a and b with b being the higher rate? I thought you were on M6 for a year then went up to UPS1 (not automatically I know).

Is this an academy?

Yourownpersonaljesus · 30/09/2017 23:11

No, it's a regular state primary. It is part of a federation though but I don't think that makes any difference.

Our academy chain does this. Because they're cheap bastards.

Nobody goes onto ups without a big folder of evidence. In reality, nobody goes up unless they are a complete arse licker and besties with the head, who basically has a cadre of her mates in slt. No lowly teacher ever gets to ups without slt responsibilities.

It used to be a lovely village primary but now it's basically Colditz.

The more I read on staffroom , the more I realise my school (an academy btw) is stuck in the Dark Ages. It seems it was nicer I the Dark Ages!

Our head just does normal stuff like progress people through and let them on to UPS because they reached the top of the pay scale! I know he pays some dodgy stuff to people he needs to recruit or retain but generally its' all pretty fair. His biases creep in at actual appointments to SLT.

I'd ask your union rep about he M6 thing - see what they say.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry to hear about the negative experiences. I will contact my union rep - good idea.

No, I've never heard of that. I certainly wasn't on m6 for only 1 year though-it was more like 8!

School finance director here
There is a small difference between 6a and 6b - the latter is used by schools who increased pt 6 by 2% a couple of years ago while 6a was pt 6 increased by the more standard 1%. There was a pay award that had that flexibility.

DellaPorter · 02/10/2017 00:32

Actually that's a bit of a misrepresentation. The maximum of the scale was increased by 2%, but so many schools couldn't afford it that 6a was created and increased by only 1%

This explains what happened
