Staff illness

What happens in your department if a member of staff is ill for more than a day?

Does it vary between KS3/4 and KS5?

If off work we send cover work in for ks3/4 or if too ill the HOD sets it. All teachers are required to cover lessons (across any subject) in our free periods (generally ends up at about one period/hour a week). We don't have separate cover staff or use supply teachers.
In our dept we try to cover each other's lessons where possible, particularly if teacher is away for more than one day, so they can still be taught by specialist teacher rather than just doing cover work.

KS5 - if only a one off missed lesson the ill teacher or HOD sends work direct for students to do in their own time instead of a lesson. If more than one lesson, if possible another member of dept will teach lesson(s).

We email in cover work.
I have all my classes set up 'ready to go in case I am ill, and get them to write an essay relevant to where we are at - it is not onerous...

I don't think my bottom set Y9 French would produce much or behave well if the cover work was to write an essay about where they were up to!

I usually book a computer room if I can (remotely).

Tabby - sounds much like our school except you do more cover.

I set essays to a KS5 class last week too. Are we at the same school? ;)
