I need the 'noblegiraffe' of English teachers...

Does anyone know whether GCSE English Lit results were pegged to 2016 results in the same way that English language and maths results were? The schools I know seem to have had large dips in Lit results. Is that the same nationally?

Can I be the noblegiraffe of English teachers? Grin

Yes, English lit results were pegged at key points in the same way as lang and maths - but it's worth remembering that this wasn't straightforward, KS2 results were used to decide if the cohort was stronger or weaker than 2016 so it wasn't just '70% passed last year so 70% have to pass this year' it was '70% passed last year but this cohort is weaker based on KS2 data so only 68% should pass'.

English lit seems to have seen an increase of over 30% in entries this year, probably because of the progress 8 double-weighting requirement, which bizarrely double-weights the best score from lit and lang so entering a weak student into Lit is worth it even if you don't spend much time on the course. This could have pulled down results (and you can see an increase in the U percentage nationally) in schools where previously they were selective about who they entered.

9-4 pass rate was 72%, slightly lower than 75% of last year, 7-9 was 18.8% this year compared to 21.3% A*/A in 2016.

Oi !

I am the slightlylessnoblegiraffe

Me! Me!

I knew all that.... sort of. I just would have expressed it differently with fewer numbers; possibly I would have used semi colons.

cantkeepawayforever · 29/09/2017 20:24

Piggy, you have made me laugh out loud.

As it has been an extremely long week, I can only thank you.....

Piggywaspushed · 29/09/2017 21:15

Haha! Mine too... as we know, dealing with parents, children and GFs.

noblegiraffe · 29/09/2017 23:12

Oh Piggy, you snooze you lose! Grin

I even left it a bit before responding to give English teachers a chance, but maths will always win because we have less marking Wink

I don't really know how to use a semi-colon though, so you definitely win on the punctuation front.

Piggywaspushed · 30/09/2017 07:49

I honestly never used a semi - colon before becoming a teacher!

I toyed with changing my user name to ignoblegiraffe

noblegiraffe · 30/09/2017 18:37

ignoblegiraffe

Grin could get confusing, there's already at least one other giraffe posting in education!

Piggywaspushed · 30/09/2017 18:54

I know! I think you may have a cult following.

Perhaps I should be a wildebeest.
