Straw poll: are inset days always casual dress?

Starting new job on Monday. Two days of inset. Can I wear pyjamas jeans or do I need to dress smartly?

It's 'smart casual' at my new school.
I'm going for black jeans and brogues with a decent not stained or ripped t shirt.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 02/09/2017 11:29

No jeans or shorts.

Doomhutch · 02/09/2017 11:34

My school is casual dress all the time, but on INSET I notice the women (who tend to be dressed smarter than the men!) are more casual.

GHGN · 02/09/2017 14:49

If you want to know, just ask your LM or any contact you have.
Most schools will be casual but some can be a bit odd with this. In all schools I have worked in, comp, state grammars and posh indie, I can turn up in casual but not too scruffy though. I teach secondary and the last day of INSET normally is the first day for year 7/12 so we have to be in work clothes.

We had an inset yesterday. A few new people were fully suited but everyone else was in jeans. Much easier for a woman I think as you could just go for a smart-casual outfit and not look out of place either way.

I would be concerned about what kind of induction you would receive, considering that they haven't told you this basic information.

I ensure that all new joiners know it's casual, that we provide a sandwich lunch, where to park and where to find me on the first morning when they get here.

We definitely tell people in advance that INSETs are casual at my school as part of the information for new staff before they arrive. Someone is also made responsible for introducing each new person to all the key people they need to know (their department, the SLT, HOY for the groups they are teaching, the admin support etc.) I'd assumed that's the norm everywhere, obviously not.

Sadly not in my experience either.

lozengeoflove · 03/09/2017 09:22

Oh god, one year we all had to endure DPs spindly toes when he wore flip flops Hmm
It's always casual affair here.

YogiYoni · 03/09/2017 11:20

I'd forgotten the heating thing. I knew there was a reason I always sported a fetching gilet at my first school's INSETs!

Right, smart jeans, blazer in car, LAYERS... Grin

Just remember if it is smart dress everyone else will be looking at you and just wishing they had the excuse of not knowing to turn up in jeans!

MidniteScribbler · 04/09/2017 10:35

For our days when we go in to setup classrooms it's absolutely casual all the way (in fact, it's generally leggings and a t-shirt, and shoes often get kicked off at the classroom door). New staff tend to dress a little better for the first day, then get over it. Actual meeting days are usually the same clothes as you would wear to teach.

leccybill · 16/09/2017 14:21

Smart here - no jeans, or tshirt. It's an academy.

Also found myself thinking on Day 1, why can't staff introduce themselves. 'Good morning, I'm Mr X, assistant head responsible for xyz'- it takes seconds!

LottieDoubtie · 16/09/2017 15:05

How was it OP?

LinoleumBlownapart · 16/09/2017 15:10

It depends what's happening. If someone is coming from outside to do a lecture/training etc then we are expected to be smart. Otherwise it's jeans pyjamas all the way, or for one particular individual, boob tubes and mini skirts Grin.
