New Year's Resolutions

I know we've only just broken up, but my brain is still whirring about school so I have been thinking about next year.

I'm going to come up with a better, neater system for recording guided reading and use it.

I am also going to make damn sure my NQT has a good year. I would like there to be one less disillusioned teacher in the world!

I'm sure I will need some new stationary in order to have a good year, so recommendations for must haves welcome!

We're going to whole-class guided reading (yessssss!) so I am resolving to actually do it every day as they'll be learning in it now, and I won't be spending the whole time separating fights in the book corner.

I am also resolving to use children's names more, as even when I know them I keep using 'sweetheart' or whatever.

And teach Spanish better. But I don't know if I can do that.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 23/07/2017 18:24

I do whole class guided reading (small class though). I like it, but I need a better way to record individual responses as evidence for progress.

I'd better think of something before the holiday takes root and I don't care about teaching any more!

Mine are to foster more of a love of reading this year. I'm going to try and read to them more, and introduce the first chapter of books to get them interested.

Also be more organised and keep things tidier. I let the pots get messed up and random paper in places they shouldn't be.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2017 11:07

To always use nice pens for marking, instead of whatever random thing I happen to have picked up. Any recs?

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 24/07/2017 14:24

Steadtler fineliners are my poison!

Good call. I have some of those already, but only like some of the colours!

Mine is also related to reading teaching. My job share teaches the writing stuff, I do the reading stuff, but it was a bit hit and miss last year.

I need to listen to kids read more.

I need to read more TO them (like the idea of reading opening chapters and then letting them carry on - maybe have 5 copies of the same book or something, they could read to each other/buddy readers).

To keep a better lid on extended write tasks, ie mark them within 2 days rather than have them float around the boot of my car. Maybe make a big deal of extended write files/books. Big it up with parents on sharing morning via some talk homework too.

Get another job!

New stationery; I am suspecting you are primary, but my key thing is colour coding!

Therefore Y7 is green, Y8 is orange, Y9 yellow etc all the way up to 13.

Means when I can't find the flaming work sheets etc for that lesson at least I know what colour folder I'm looking in Grin

Love my KikkiK planner too....couldn't live without it - it has my life in it.

PumpkinPie2016 · 21/08/2017 07:33

I'm secondary so I have made a marking schedule for each of my classes to try to ensure I keep on top of it all as at times last year I got behind Blush

This year we have SLT drop ins to lessons so I can't afford to be getting behind!

I am going to try some techniques to speed up my marking though as I am very slow!

My other resolution is to take more risks in lessons and try different things out as i didn't do enough of that last year.

We'll see how long it lasts though Grin

MaisyPops · 21/08/2017 07:39

I want to try and make a homework calendar so each class is set and hands in homework on set days rather than as and when it suits me.

I want to go to the gym before work once a week.

I want to simplify my routines even more and have them tight.

Darkblueskies · 21/08/2017 07:41

Try not to get so behind with marking.
And set homework weekly.

The above makes me sound so shit but it's honest!

LottieDoubtie · 21/08/2017 07:44

Work smart not nec as hard.

Get in early, get out quicker.

Do the bits I enjoy.

Keep work and social life separate.

Get a new job.

Not nec in that order...

ASauvingnonADay · 21/08/2017 22:32

Leave on time every day
Use the gym
Try not to give all my time to the tricky kids and not forget the quiet kids (this is so hard)
Stay chilled all year!
