What really makes a difference to teaching & learning & what can parents do to help

Assuming there is a supportive head, SMT etc etc what could really make a difference to underfunded state secondary schools?

Ds is moving from a private school to a local state school as the private school have been totally unsupportive with his SEN. I'm very aware he will be taking up valuable resources (no EHCP & only a working diagnoses mean no extra funding). His new school seem to want to do everything they can for their students.

I can't find any mention of a PTA & have only seen fundraising activities advertised for charities, not the school.

Im thinking things like Kaboodle subscriptions, enrichment activities, but also things like his previous school have parents & ex students go in to do careers talks etc.

What I don't want to do is to waltz in all high & mighty flashing the cash, (would that even be allowed) but there must be small things that schools struggle to pay for that his previous school took for granted for example a teacher I know said she couldn't afford the Kaboodle subscription for her class.

I am quite time poor (work full time & two kids with SEN) so if there is a PTA my involvement couldn't be substantial.

I'm not really sure what you can do as one person coming in, but its definitely worth having a conversation with someone in SEND or SMT if they have the time. Its also really reassuring that there are parents like you around, we don't see that much in the school I teach at.
