Supply after PGCE?

I'm just about limping to the end of my PGCE year. There is no way I think I am cut out for FT teaching (young DC hoping to be pregnant again soon) and tbh my final placement has put me off even a PT role.

Do you think I would be considered for supply without having done an NQT year ? Very fortunate in that we are not desperate for the money (although some more would be nice!) but this year has been such a graft I feel that not doing any thing at all would be a waste of all the time & effort.
Live in London if that's relevant. Is there much call for supply teachers or would I be very bottom of the pile as no NQT year ?

No do it, the agencies would snap you up. It gets easier by the way.

I did supply for a couple of terms after my PGCE - I qualified at Christmas (my PGCE was part-time), and I couldn't face going straight into a full time job.

In the event, I got offered 3 jobs, without the stress of application, and was able to complete my NQT year on a part-time basis. Okay, I'm now working full time which wasn't the plan at all. But I haven't had to actually apply for any jobs.

You might find a school that you really like by doing supply. And you'll definitely find schools that you don't like. And you get to do all the fun parts of teaching without the heavy stuff.

But at some point, it's worth trying to go through your NQT year as it will leave all your options open to you.

This is really encouraging thank you. Is it worth writing directly to schools do you think or going via agencies ? I definitely want to try and get a PT NQT position at some point but my final placement has really taken away all my enthusiasm / motivation so I just want to take a break over summer then try & ease myself back into it in the right school after Oct half term hopefully

Definitely do supply. I did agency work, only ever worked within a ten mile radius and only did advanced bookings as I had young DC. It worked perfectly and I got my current role because of it.
Similar to you I hated my last teaching placement but found supply stress free. After a few months the same schools ask for you back so you can still build good relationships with staff.
The only downside is there is a time limit on how much you can do before you have to do your nqt. Can't remember exactly how long, maybe 5 years but that could be incorrect.

Do supply.

They take people who have not even started PGCE.

Go with agencies, sign up with as many as you can, make sure your DBS is on the update service and go for it.

Definitely do supply! Is a great way of finding out what schools are like from the inside. Agencies will pay you more per day that you would get as an NQT and you go home at 3 with no marking or planning. Then YOU decide where you want to work. I did this, was offered a perm job in a fab school, and now happily employed there, on a much better salary that if I had gone the trad application route and without all the hassle of application forms/interview days. Just remember, YOU are the scarce commodity, don't sell yourself short!

This sounds brilliant thank you all. My plan is to settle DC into school (long settling in period up until end of Sept) then do supply 2/3 days p week for the time being then if I could find a PT job off the back of that would be amazing.
