TLR when part time

SaltedCaramelEverything · 13/01/2017 16:20

To keep things simple, let's say the TLR is £10,000 for a head of department.

If I was to manage to get the job on 4 days a week (so 0.8) - would the TLR I'd be paid be £8,000 or £10,000??

The issues that arise on my day off would be dealt with me on the next day I'm in - so my point is I'm doing "leadership and responsibility" fully, just fitting it in on less days - would stay a late on the others to ensure everything is done and be available on my phone for any urgencies.

I thought I'd rather ask MN than my HT or business manager as just at the early stages of thinking about things at the mo!

Thanks in advance

The part time people with TLRs in my school get it paid part time.

northcoastmum · 13/01/2017 16:25

In my school part-timers with TLR get it full-time

Phantommagic · 13/01/2017 16:28

Usually part time money in my experience.

Ilikesweetpeas · 13/01/2017 16:36

It's part time, I get 0.8 of my TLR for working 4 days. Annoying though as I still pick up and deal with any issues that have happened on my day off!

SaltedCaramelEverything · 13/01/2017 16:37

Thanks for the replies. Given that I would be dealing with the issues, do you think it's negotiable?

Otherwise it's a bit demotivating and I can't see myself saying "well it happened yesterday so it's not my problem" going down well with anyone!

They don't give TLRs to part timers at my school Angry

BackforGood · 13/01/2017 16:57

Part time IME

northcoastmum · 13/01/2017 19:31

If you're doing all the job you should get all the money. If not, you should agree in advance which bits of the job you'll leave out. It could be argued that teaching part-time means you have MORE time for the extra duties, as you presumably teach fewer classes so have less prep/marking of your own to do.

Jessesbitch · 13/01/2017 20:35

Rather than give HoD TLR to a part timer in my school (no full timers in dept) they gave it to a related HoD to cover. He doesn't get money just extra frees. As a non specialist he can't do what is required so we as part timers do the work... unpaid.

Hmm...

Phantommagic · 13/01/2017 20:42

Northcoastmum. You have proportionally less marking etc, same as proportionally lower wages. Usually still have a tutor group, all parents' eves, same duties etc. I think schools get an excellent deal out of 0.8 staff usually. Probably wouldn't give tlr to anyone less than 0.8 in ours though. But would be part time wage.

padkin · 13/01/2017 21:05

STPCD (Burgundy Book) says that part-time teachers who have a TLR must be paid it pro-rata in proportion to their part-time contract, and can't be paid the full whack, even if they take on the full responsibility. NUT suggests that in those circumstances a teacher should be given specific time off from their teaching duties to cover the additional workload, or have their directed time adjusted to give more time to TLR work and less time spent directly teaching. Obviously academies can do and say whatever the hell they like.

SaltedCaramelEverything · 14/01/2017 08:12

Thanks all. Hoping with it being at an academy that can work in my favour. Will ask some other part time staff what happens for them

I have heard of cases where pt staff have successfully negotiated for FT TLR but it certainly isn't the norm.

I'm personally of the opinion that HOD is one job that can't really be done part time as I don't think it's fair on your team.

Letseatgrandma · 17/01/2017 07:02

I have two secondary friends (I'm primary so things aren't quite the same) who had to give up their head of department roles when they asked to go part time, as the head felt you needed to be full time to do the role effectively.

PotteringAlong · 17/01/2017 07:10

I was told I had to give up my TLR when I went part time.

AnaG1ypta · 20/01/2017 22:29

I am 0.8 but get 0.5 of a TLR as I share HOD with another PT colleague. I think if I did 100% of the role I'd get 80%.

Foxsox · 01/02/2017 22:38

I'm 0.8 and my head gave me the full TLR which I was Suprised by. I had expected 0.8 of it.
When I raised an eyebrow whilst singing my new contract the lady in the office just smiled.

I have a brilliant head who appreciates that someone working 0.8 can give as much as FT.

It's certainly worth negotiating.

SaltedCaramelEverything · 04/02/2017 09:32

Thanks all. Having thought about it there's no way I'm going to do 100% of the role for 80% pay!! That's ridiculous IMO.

So I will either respond to 80% of TLR related emails / task requests, or they can pay me 100%. Given the chaos option 1 could cause I'm hoping they'll see the light!

susannahmoodie · 04/02/2017 09:38

I'm a FT HoD and whilst I do think pt staff get a raw deal in teaching generally, I don't buy that you can do the full role when you are in 4 days. Ultimately the day today running of the dept falls to you, if something crops up on your day off that needs to be dealt with immediately, which often happens, then you aren't there.

SaltedCaramelEverything · 04/02/2017 10:13

I should have made clearer my most recent post the role I'm now referring to isn't regarding a HoD role. It's the role I do now and whenever I've been off sick / school trip etc it's been fine - I'm not in a role where things need dealing with on the day so it's been no problem to catch up. It's also not something that the 20% can be easily given to someone else which is why I think I'll be able to stand my ground on it

Our HOD is often off visiting other schools (it's a MAT role) so is often absent. It does annoy me that my school won't give TLRs to part timers, but effectively gives us a part time HOD.

MaisyPops · 13/02/2017 19:07

Ive known the value of a TLR be increased when someone goes PT. E.g. if the FT payment is £10,000 then when the person goes PT the TLR is increased technically so that the PT member of staff gets £10,000 take home still but its technivally 0.8 of the "full" amount.
Always thought that was a nice way around jt
