Gifts for students' birthdays?

I'm an NQT and I teach primary. Do any of the teachers here give birthday gifts to their students?

We do a card signed by pupils and staff (and the same for staff birthdays) but I work in a small ks4 behaviour PRU so that's not necessarily practical for other schools. We have made or bought cakes on occasions too. A few years ago a student with a very difficult home life let slip that she hadn't had a birthday cake for years so we had a mini party at lunch time complete with a kids birthday cake. I'm welling up just thinking about her reaction.
