Hello all.

I've been doing some summer reading on flipped learning. I'm quite intrigued, especially with the mastery aspect.

Has anyone got experience of flipping their lessons? Good or bad?

Thanks.

I like it but it increases my preparation time considerably if I make a video (but yeah, you don't HAVE to make a video).
I still set "get ready for the next lesson" as homework but not as often as when I was seriously trialling the flipped model a few years ago.

The mastery stuff I could never get going. In my school, you have to set dates for summative assessments, so students wouldn't be able to work at their own pace. I also didn't fancy having lots of different experiments all at once every lesson. I'm my own technician so I can do it but if you have to order a week in advance, you're stuffed.

I tried having multiple experiments on the go a couple of times and it was ok, but sometimes you really want to gather everyone together and ask pertinent questions based on something that happened.

Also, it's a nightmare to do spaced practice if they're all at different stages of the unit.

I love the idea of mastery. It makes so much more sense to me than the rapid pace/20 minute progress checks, from a few years ago.

It boils down to... 'Don't do anything new until they've got the old stuff.' Revolutionary. I wonder who thought of it.

Oh, by the way, check out Nearpod, it's how I have been flipping recently.
