Report writing arghhhhhh. Oh all good plans! I try to be really good honest. I have planned to get up and do some each day before, set myself a daily target and let's just say it has gone out the window as quickly as the speed of sound. Amazing what else is so more appealing .
Defrosting the freezer.
Sorting out the kitchen cupboards
Tidying my daughters tip of a bedroom!

I will start them tomorrow honest

But just imagine how clean our houses will be 😂

I feel your pain.
I had the whole day where I had to wait in for a delivery. Nothing else I had to do. 2, I got 2 done.
I fucking hate report writing. Especially EYFS reports.

Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Wouldn't mind quite so much if I thought any parents would spend as long reading them as I do writing them... Particularly hate it this year because I am required to say if a child is below/at/exceeding year end expectations. Try writing a set of reports for summer born year 1 boys - they just aren't developmentally ready for the demands of year 1. I know they will catch up over the next couple of years and they have tried as hard as they are able this year. But I have a horrible feeling that parents reading the reports will skim over all my comments about their son's hard work and effort and keep returning to the sentence that says they are below year end expectations. :(

(I've done all my English and Maths, and have done the personal comments and foundation subjects to finish 6 completely. Trying to get 2 more done before I give up this evening...)

Our system uses statement banks but oh my days the grammar is shocking! Takes twice as long as it should!

I'm lucky in a way, last year I had 325 reports to write, this year I have 28.

I'm using the Twinkl statement banks but it is still a ball ache.

The thing that really annoys me is that I doubt one parent gives half a fuck about their child's ability to learn through trying or whatever the hell it is.
They are 5. They want to know if they are happy and doing OK in reading, writing and maths.

I am eyfs and agree with what's being said. I have conversations daily with parents. There are only so many ways you can say 'gives meaning to their marks'. I have a very boy heavy, Sumner birth, OMG is my GLD really going to be anywhere near what it was last year class! Most of my parents have to get their child to translate what I say to them, but hey ho. At least the weather forecast tomorrow is rain so maybe I will smile and be focused!

This makes me feel like I should have started mine... Oops.

Why do you use statement banks? Parents read between the lines -

DD first report was 3 pages long for each subject - it's now one small report card !!

I use a statement bank to get a starting point really.

It's the 'characteristics of effective learning' that are near impossible to write about.

We do our reports in February, setting targets for the end of year. In July we give TA assessments and a single general paragraph about attitude etc. It's somehow easier to write reports on dark nights! Wierd but true and we relish this time of year now!

'self directed' is a phrase I like.

Child x is aware of class rules just needs to choose to use them.

I like to leave my reports to the last minute. The pressure sharpens the mind. Once I have written the first report, I am on a roll.

I am fairly formulaic with my reports - general attitude, comment on group/practical work, comment about exam results, comment about what to do to improve.

I am head of Key Stage so have to review all reports, send some back, and make my own comment too.

I need to do mine but have terrible nausea and vomiting and have been basically bed bound all week :( (pregnant)

Reports are part of the reason I love working as supply now.

The thought of trying to write reports with two preschoolers who have a stomach bug fills me with horror. Then I remember I don't!

I'm doing mine now. Well not now, I'm on Mumsnet, but you know...

It takes me ages to get started but once I get going I tend to do them in one (long) sitting. My kids are older though, so leave me to it. One is in bed on Netflix and the other is in the same room as me, binge watching Vampire Diaries while I work.

They are taking full advantage of my distraction. Every so often one of them will make me a cup of tea. We'll go somewhere nice tomorrow as a thank you.

I'm done. Hurrah!! I've never got close to finishing them in half term before - most years I've barely started them by this stage. I'm blaming it on a combination of bad weather, a child who is nearly 20 and so certainly doesn't want to spend any time with me and a list of leadership jobs as long as my arm that I need to get to grips with so reports seemed like a less grim option....

I'm on holiday dong them in the sun - hurrah. Have done all the comments but now trying to do the objective ticks (eyfs). I never want see the Microsoft Word tick symbol ever again! √√√√ (agh 😣)

Thanks for the thread it geed me up no end and 3.5 hours later I am done...will spend my given report day catching up on largely pointless assessments and marking.

People are report writing now? I won't do mine until the end of June, once I have exam results.

I anticipate spending about 4 hours on my own classes and probably another 1 reviewing my Key Stage reports.

4 hours? How can you get them done in 4 hours? I spend about an hour per child? including time spent making a cup of tea and dicking about on MN
