I'm currently part of all of the unions as a student. I think I've ruled out nut but can't decide between the others. No one Union is particularly supported in my school. Are there particular benefits from choosing one over another?

I would argue to differ. I think the important changes have been made by the militant unions with the others following...

I can see this view being controversial Smile

As a pp said, it looks likely that ATL and NUT will merge.

Other than that, I can't really advise you. I was NUT when I was teaching and fully support strike action both in principle and for the reasons we actually went on strike for so my views are so different from yours as to probably be no use in your decision making. FWIW, though, NUT have always been brilliant for me and colleagues when needed for representation as well as on campaigning.

I'm an ATL rep, and I asked specifically about the merger rumours at a recent training event. The official said that there were no plans or talks of plans, to merge with NUT.

I'm not sure whether the ATL conscience clause and NUT strike position are going to be compatible.

I was NUT and when I had a serious employer dispute they were as much use as a chocolate teapot. No calls back from regional reps, the helpline people were sympathetic but did nothing. I ended up paying privately for advice which was far from cheap.

I'm currently unionless (and in a job at a far nicer place) and investigating insurance schemes offered by non union professional associations.
