I want to get teacher something nice, without triggering paperwork etc - or awkwardness of her refusing it.

A cards always good?

Or is it just more emotional vampire crap for the teacher to mop up after a day of caterwauling infants?

It's nice to read something genuine from parents about how we are helping their kids. Particularly on days when you feel like you've accomplished very little! Cards are one of the few things I've hung on to over the years.
My favourite ever present, actually, was when one parent organised a class letter. Each parent wrote a paragraph about how I'd helped their child and one compiled it into a big letter. I'll hold on to that forever.

Presents are fine, and great if you really know the teachers likes and dislikes. But so much of it is just...pointless stuff. If one of my parents really, really wanted to buy me something I'd hope they picked some art materials or something.

Primary or secondary?

Tbh based on the issues you have had I wouldn't feel comfortable with a gift.
Instead a nice card and perhaps a donation of a few (3) popular books to the school library

Not my usual style (wine Chocs and stationery lover here) but in this case I think it best.

I'm public sector, but not a teacher. We have to declare gifts of value over £20.

I have no idea of the limit in my school but I've never been given anything expensive so it doesn't matter. I think the flowers idea is a nice one. I know someone above said no more mugs but I would love a mug (not a diddy thin one that gets chopped though).

Oh and wine. I love wine I'm pregnant and still love a tiny glass as a treat every now and again

Why not send a thank you card and some movie vouchers? She could always use those, rather than you buying her something she will not like.
